Aputumpu Music Festival

Japanther
Described as a “Performance Galaxy” by Vanity Fair and “Super hard, incredibly fast and overall inspiring” by Thrasher, Japanther has always been a band apart, running the gamut from performance art to punk rock and back again. Recent projects include Japanther in 3-D, a New York State Council on the Arts-funded book and film companion to the band’s interactive rock opera, commissioned for the PERFORMA 07 biennial and premiered with a sold-out run at P.S. 122, plus a collaboration with Dan Graham for Beyond, his first American retrospective. The story behind Rock ‘n’ Roll Ice Cream (Menlo Park Recordings, March 2) is an adventure tale of exploring harmonies, writing together, and a little bit of that West Coast surf vibe whilst lurking a bit towards Japanther’s salad days in Brooklyn to draw on pop hooks and simple drum parts that make skating seem easier and bikes move faster. Japanther has performed at Automotive High School in Brooklyn (a community benefit to save students’ imperiled production of Guys and Dolls), on street corners, in people's bedrooms, in historic concert halls, on boats, and the Williamsburg Bridge. Japanther is a party band that brings much more to the show.

Cerebral Ballzy
Cerebral Ballzy is a punk band from Brooklyn, New York, United States. The band was formed in 2008 and released their debut, self titled, album on 26 July 2011. The album was released in full as an online preview on the Revolver Magazine website.

Cerebral Ballzy are known for their love of 80s punk, along with a keen interest in drinking, girls, pizza and skateboarding. The band has received praise for their debut single Insufficient Fare and their energetic live performances. According to the lead singer, Honor Titus, the name Cerebral Ballzy came from a friend who dropped a slice of pizza on a train track and picked it up. Honor said “That was ballsy” and his friend replied “Cerebral Ballsy!”.

The band has completed a tour of the US and played major UK festivals including Hevy Music, Sonisphere and Latitude. They played at the Summer Sonic Festival in Japan and the Reading and Leeds festivals in the UK in August 2011.

Diarrhea Planet
Diarrhea Planet is a six-piece rock and roll band from Nashville, TN. Their sound has often been described as The Ramones holding Van Halen hostage with an arsenal of fireworks and explosives. Diarrhea Planet's four guitarists provide enough riffs to make Jack Black squeal like a schoolgirl, while lead singer Hodan delivers enough hooks to straighten the curl out of Justin Timberlake's hair. In a world of unintelligible lo-fi recording, reverb drenched vocals, and tuneless guitars, Diarrhea Planet aims to put the backbone back into rock and roll.

The band initially formed in the Spring of 2009 with drummer Casey, and two guitarists Jordan Smith and Evan P. Donohue. That fall the band decided to flesh out their sound with bass and a third guitar, adding Mike Boyle and Brent Toler. They self-released the five song EP, Aloha, in November. The album sounded like a mix between an uncontrollable college party and a gut-wrenching Tae Bo workout. With the Mediafire link popping up on a variety of blogs, Aloha became a sleeper online sensation. Perhaps due to the unusual band name, the EP garnered around 1,500 downloads in its first week online. By the time the band took down the Mediafire link early the next year, The EP had collected over 10,000 downloads.

In the summer of 2010, Evan P. Donohue decided to focus on his own music and left Diarrhea Planet. The band quickly adopted shredders Evan Bird and Emmett Miller, generating Diarrhea Planet's most empowering line-up. The band shifted some of their focus from delinquent party rock to slightly more sophisticated songwriting and guitar theatrics that will make every living guitar hero cry out of joy and/or despair. After this change-up, the band played an exhausting amount of local shows. They have opened for acts such as Wavves, Fucked Up, Jeff the Brotherhood, Andrew Jackson Jihad, Defiance OH, Jacuzzi Boys, The Spits, and The Coathangers. They have also played a variety of basements, warehouses, frat bars, and dorm rooms. The overwhelming volume and sheer brutality of their live onslaught satiates those who crave power and thunder, while the meek grovel on the beer-soaked floor. The wall of heavy riffage and intricate shredding infuses audiences with enough electrical energy to stave off sleep for the rest of the weekend. Despite their leanings towards punk and heavy metal, Diarrhea Planet swears by the Bible of pop. With a distinct emphasis on vocal hooks and harmonies, their shows often morph into massive, drunken sing-alongs.

Diarrhea Planet put out their first physical release in the spring of 2011, when Philadelphia's Evil Weevil label released Aloha on 7" vinyl. That summer, the band signed to Nashville's Infinity Cat Recordings (home of Jeff the Brotherhood, Heavy Cream, Natural Child, Pujol, and more) and released the 7" Yama-Uba as part of Infinity Cat's Econoline series. The band has traveled throughout the East coast on extensive self-booked tours in support of their two releases. This fall, the band will continue to tour in support of their full-length album, Loose Jewels, which comes out September 20th on Infinity Cat Recordings. - Thomas “Brent Tommy Tollroad Dallas” Toler

Osekre and The Lucky Bastards
Dan Burdman - Drums
Michael Benham - Bass
Andre Rivie - Guitar
Eric Walter - Saxophone
Nick Barber - Saxophone

While Afro rock and poetry aptly describes his style, “Jama,” is the Ghanaian word to perfectly depict his groove. Osekre’s Vibe is delivered in Ga, Twi and English; Occasionally Adangbe is thrown in. In Osekre’s music, memorable and deeply exciting African hooks are immersed in beats that draw from playing soccer barefooted and selling cold water in plastic bags on the streets of Accra. And yet, deep within the excitement of Osekre’s music, lyricism and message belies the influence of an afropolitan whose continent has become his passion, but whose world view is universal.

On stage, Osekre’s work comes across as an artist whose hands have been turned by the folk-loving, rock-jamming, reggae-moving, indie and hippie-admiring crowds from New York to California and from Indiana to Boston.

Osekre has performed and shared his poetry and music at Harvard, MIT, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, and Cornell Universities. Some of his other readings include a performance at the Annual Helen Keller international benefit, which raised close to $900,0000 dollars to help the blind and visually impaired around the world. He has also competed at the world-famous Apollo theater, reached the quarter finals phase of the poetry slam competitions at the Nuyorican Poets Café, Performed with his band at the Dumbo Arts Festival, The 92Y Tribeca, The Shrine, and has been featured on the “Wake Up Call” of WBAI, listener-supported “free speech radio” in New York City.

Eula
"... a band so filled with elements of pop and punk and blaring rock that it’s amazing any of them still have eardrums left to help keep them in tune. It’s colorful and painfully loud and the imagery it evokes are one part horrific and one part sexual." - FensePost
