shows i saw:
--Boban i Marko Markovic Orkestar-- my buddy is croation and they are serbs so they are supposed to hate eachother but they still speak the same language so she followed my lead with the sign making stuff and made a sign in serbo-croatian which got us some friendly, slightly perverted, looks from the band.

Jay Reatard-- SO GOOD. i just really enjoyed the energy from this set. and kristin-Deerhunter tour manager was texting me from the stage so that was kind of a cool thing.

Caribou--as much as i like the album the live show was a bit disappointing.

Fuck Buttons- better than i expected. a good show.

Atlas Sound--really great obviously. i really liked it. i got there during Extra Golden thinking that i'd get to the front when all their fans left but Extra Golden finished and no one moved. so i wasnt as close as i've been for my past few brad encounters which unfortunately i let get the better of me and i think i enjoyed…

DAY ONE (07/19/2008)

This past weekend I went to the Pitchfork Music Festival for the third year in a row. I almost didn’t go this year because I thought the lineup was a bit underwhelming, but I am really glad that I made it after all. The artists I wanted to see were excellent, and many of the artists I saw who I did not know beforehand were quite good as well.

This year I went with Carlene, my girlfriend who has never been to a music festival or a concert, for that matter, and my good friend Roy, who went for the second year in a row.

On Saturday we arrived around 1pm. Titus Andronicus were playing some loud rock music but we wandered around to get a feel for the festival rather than check them out. It was raining off and on early in the afternoon, which made for some interesting sights. The ground was muddy as fuck in some places and there were even groups of people who were spreading the mud all over themselves and dancing around.

The most epic “Out and About” yet.

FRIDAY, JULY 18

Like last year’s festival, Pitchfork officially kicked off with an evening of beloved bands performing their classic albums. It’s kind of a gimmicky concept for a concert if you ask me. Any band popular enough to headline a show with only one album to their name does what Mission of Burma, Sebadoh and Public Enemy did on Friday. What’s the point of an established band playing an album in its entirety? Nostalgia?

OK, there are some bands where that idea isn’t entirely preposterous. They booked one of them last year – but that was Sonic Youth doing Daydream Nation. And these were three bands were performing albums I didn’t most want to hear most them. Burma should’ve busted out their debut EP, Signals, Calls and Marches, with the “Academy Fight Song / Max Ernst” single thrown in. …

Fri 18 Jul – Pitchfork Music Festival 2008

With no rain in sight my decent upon the final day of Pitchfork began with walking into the festival just as Japanese rockers Boris took the stage. It began sounding like stingingly fast punk rock. I walked through the crowd towards the beer vendors for wristbands and tickets, all the while hearing the cries of Atsuo across the field.

After rendez-vousing with friends and giving a twice-over on DEPART-ment, we sat in the shade and talked and drank a bit. It was soon that we saw a small crowd gathering at the curb across from the Robinson's stand.Les Savy Fav frontman Tim Harrington sat upon a powder blue blanket with various cds (obviously illegitimate copies) such as Spoon's "Girls Can Tell", strewn across it. He held up a plastic wrapped Xbox 360 game, it appeared to be some sort of foot ball game. Harrington declared it a great game and it will play on any system and that he was only selling it for two dollars. …

This was my first year attending Pitchfork. The atmosphere of the festival was incredible. Everyone was nice and volunteers and workers were especially good. I found the cup collecting to be extremely nice. Because of this I did not have to buy a single drink. Now onto the music reviews.

Saturday

Titus Andronicus:
I did not know anything about this band before seeing but I found their stage act to be exciting. They moved around the stage a lot and interacted with the audience well. Their type of music was not my favorite but I had a good time.

Jay Reatard:
Once again I did not know anything about this band before I saw them. The show started off good when King Khan came out and introduced Jay. His comments were hilarious and entertaining. After that the show kinda went down hill. the bassist moved around a lot and had a lot of energy but Jay did not so much. Jay's music was also not my favorite but I did not mind it.

So this is my 4th year attending the festival, and this was probably the first or second best year overall. Despite the predicted forecast of rain throughout the weekend, it only stuck around for a few hours on Saturday. After that, it was nothing but clear skies (and a lot of heat, but I can't complain). None of the bands that we wanted to check out were disappointing, and I know we missed out on a lot of great bands as well. Last year suffered from some pretty bad sound issues, but those were few and far between this year. Everything sounded great for the most part. I'll just list the bands I saw and write a little bit about them...



SATURDAY

Titus Andronicus
I had first listened to these guys two days before the festival, and I was actually pretty pumped to see them. They had great energy and it was a good way to kick off the weekend.

Caribou
Probably my 3rd favorite set of the weekend. …

I left you, the reader, with the woeful tale of my run in with S3 Security last I posted. Upon that notion I made my way to the second day of Pitchfork with but a plastic camera.

I arrived on the scene as the rain was dying down the masses with their various methods of impermiableness. Like cattle waiting to get in the pen people stood in line in a spectrum of wetness. The girl in front of me had ridden her bike there and wiped out, her entire back covered in mud and gravel from the street.

Upon entrance into the softball fields Caribou had just started his/their set. I listened passively as his type of music seems suited for more intimate and dark venues than for 2 p.m. on a humid summer day. I wandered around a bit and grabbed some food at one of the many delicious vendor tents. I got the pulled pork sandwich from Wishbone and it was delicious, just the right amount of bbq sauce. …

Note: Due to personal experience this post isn't so much about the music.

Upon arrival there were absolutely no lines, the sudden downpour that occurred at about 4:30 may have had something to do with that (and the humidity). I had missed Mission of Burma altogether and had gotten there just as Sebadoh had began playing "Bubble and Scrape." I approached the older man who was going to subject my bag to search. I had my Canon DSLR in tow thinking, foolishly, that I was going to get this thing in without a press pass. When I read "professional cameras" I do not think Digital Rebel XTi and part of this is due to the fact that I by no means consider myself anything close to a professional photographer. But I digress, the man rummages through my bag and sees my camera and calls his supervisor over to have a second look. My friend had already entered the festival and was waiting across the border for me. …
