Last.fm is not handling the feedback well, IMHO

I gave it a try for the past few weeks and after using last.fm since the audioscrobbler years ... I think I'm going to just walk away. Good luck with future development!

    Good luck! Where at?

Send me a message to my Inbox for details. We are keeping alive the spirit of the Original AudioScrobbler and we actually LISTEN to feedback :D

Oh, and the silent majority still prefer the old version, just like the loud majority, ;)

WOW! A "silent majority" of ONE PERSON, just ONE in that thread likes the new last.fm layout. And that thread immediately got multiple "don't like the new version" replies. So from ONE person you infer that the "majority" likes the new version? Wow.

Guess you haven't been privy to the last.fm's visitor stats lately, huh?

WOW! 13K of people joined a group, while the site contained atleast a million users! So from 13 people, who joined a group people like to troll you infer the majority dislikes it?

My guess is that the silent majority is just getting on with using the site as they always did and not worrying about which layout was best anymore.

Honestly the fact this thread is still on the first page should say something to Last.FM. Something like "Hay a very large number of people dislike your site and the several ofones that find it better overall still miss a few features"

Well the thread went 10 days without a post and fell off the front page until the OP made a post back into the thread and bumped it.

That being said the thread does show a large number of people who do dislike the site and ones who miss some features, but I don't think that has ever been the actual debate, the debate is what will last.fm do about it.

    Users asked for:

    Paint it black: it's back.

The ability to show more than their top ten charts: We got the option for 10, 15, 20, 30 and 50 plus choice of defaul time frame.

To have the top 500 of our overalls instead of top 200: we got it

To have recent visitors move from the dashboard to the profile page, they did

To move the about me from the middle of the profile page to the side bar, they did.

I had a longer list in this or another thread about complaints that last.fm doesn't listen to their users.

They may not implement everything we ask for, but they did act on specific bits of user feedback as they can and fits in with their road map. They listened more during this upgrade than any other upgrade I have ever been a part of.

But there's no sense they're listening and not just implementing changes they were going to anyway- paint it black was always coming back, wasn't it?

It's been almost two months and still no word on the state of recommendations, for example. Part of me's given up and only here because of the friends I've made.

Coming into the forums once in a while to actually address concerns could help, even if it loses them an hour of programming time (I know they do occasionally but nowhere near enough and it's very selective; it's just small things like that that helps with goodwill which is arguably more important than that hour of actual work). You start feeling "why should I bother giving constructive feedback/ report bugs if no-one's going to read it".

But bleh we've been over all this for 42 pages and ima posting in the forum again googoogojoob.

well I guess you are right.. sorry for being a douche, but still there are several major outstanding issues. (mainly charts not being in time, and the new set-up). Don't worry I am sure it will get sorted out soon...

It at well looks that there is a lot of vocal people about the topic - with whole different oppinions both positive and negative...

I don't get this at all,. Why are people so passionate about a layout? As long as the tracks scrobble and radio works I am happy, and, to be honest, I prefer the new Last.fm design. I think the staff did a great job. I'm not going to write a book about it, though. Jesus.

It's not so much passion for the old layout as objection to how some things aren't as easy as they were before, not without additional clicking, and other things are MIA. Also, the site changed without warning, which came as a bit of a shock, even to those of us who were involved in beta testing on the day. I mention that because that's when this thread started.

Some things have vastly improved, it's a dream to dive into our Libraries and find all our hitherto buried treasures, but others have suffered, tagging and comms (the social aspect of this social site) to name but two.

This is the thread that never ends,
Yes, it goes on and on my friends.
Some people started posting in it, not knowing what it was,
And they'll continue posting in it forever just because...

I agree with DuFletch. It's only a stinking layout. The old one sucked. What's the point of it? Slow as hell, recommendations barely updated. I still don't see what's wrong with the new one. Also, last.fm DO listen to the feedback. I saw alot of comments on threads just SUGGESTED IDEAS, instead of complaining "Bring back the crappy old one!".

    I'm off.

Totally agree, the main features of the site now work just as well if not better in the case of scrobbling then they did before. I was in the beta and greatly looking forward to the day this went live.

And for my purposes the new layout is probably quicker then the old one for clicking around, particularly as regards tagging and loving things.

Last.fm do listen to suggestions, they just wont agree to to the bring back old last.fm one.

Not to mention it's quite hard to work under so much pressure. I believe profile customization & recommendations from friends will come. And if not, we'll have to suck it up. Last.fm is a free service, for most part.

Without the intent to become personal, but your reaction shows that you either did not read the linked post, or you did not understand what was said in it.
For your information: I linked to that thread because there somebody is doing the same "silent majority-magic" as you, only twisting it positive instead of negative.Guess you haven't been privy to the last.fm's visitor stats lately, huh?
I am a moderator here, my job is to deal with the people that are still visiting the site, not to care about the ones that do not. But if you are referring to the alexa-stats one group kindly offers...I see not only that the current amount of visitors is dropping, but also that the same happened last year, around this time. And I do not recall a huge site-update at that time.

The return of 'paint it black' was promised on the blog-page, only minutes after the site went live... that did not stop countless people complaining that it was missing. And there are more examples. It seems that some people can't be pleased. Hell, there are quite a few people that still think that Last.fm-staff totally killed the site and removed all the features, because they are a few clicks away, or on another page. Even now, some six weeks after the new site went live people seem to feel the need to give rather emotional feedback.
That doesn't mean that all fixes are that easy. Judging by the number of threads about 'recommendations' I guess that ain't the easiest job...

Let's face it, "Bring back the old Last.fm" is more a demand than a suggestion, anyway ;)

One thing I liked about the old site was info was more compact and easier to see. Especially new shouts. Instantly visible. And I liked higher visibility of journals on our pages and around the site. And tag clouds of course.

The clicking thing is an issue. I know it doesn't seem much but it is enough. Probably someone up on Nielsen stuff could explain that better than me.

I'm guessing they had to move stuff off onto other pages to speed the site up. The old site was getting a bit clunky after all the new features were tacked on where there was space.

Jester is definitely right about the peaks and troughs of Last.fm visitors over the course of a year. I've noticed that too. Holidays, school/college, major events and the site's a ghost town.

The paint it black thing was unbelievable. It's true, it was in the blog the instant after go-live, but no matter how many times those of us who had read it said so, people still kept demanding it's return, and not only that, were happy as Larry when they got it. When there were so many other, bigger issues! Jaw. Ground.
