Will 'Borat' make Balkan music popular?

I don't know if you've seen Borat, the movie, but there is quite a selection of Balkan music in there: Esma Redzepova, Fanfare Ciocarlia, Kocani Orkestar, Goran Bregovic, Mahala Rai Banda. For me it was the movies of Emir Kusturica, but maybe a new wave will take notice.

I also started listening to Balkan music after watching films by Emir Kusturica. And I have to say that his my favourite director.

Hmmm... I haven't seen Borat yet but I'm going to. I've heard that there's Ederlezi song in that movie and I'm quite sure that it doesn't make such a big impression as in a scene in Time of The Gypsies.

I've seen Borat and have only just got into Balkan music.

I thought it was because i just decided to get into a new genre, but maybe it was Borat.

    no

No, it will not. Or at least not in positive manner. Simply the audience don't fit the case. In general, I think that it's not correct to compare Borat with Kusturica's films.

    no way

There are better films that show Balkan music and people who make it...I agree that " it's not correct to compare Borat with Kusturica's films"(!)
Borat is a parody that has really nothing to do with Balkans. Some people still think that film was made in Kazakhstan...(the truth is it was mainly shot in Romania).
Watch "When the Road Bends: Tales of a Gypsy Caravan"- a truly beautiful film about Gypsy Musicians ----> www.gypsycaravanmovie.com
I recommend Tony Gatlif films and music.

I never compared Borat to movies by Kusturika. If you read my original comment, you will see. The only link between them is that they use Balkan music. What I was saying is that, for me, I discovered Balkan brass band with Kusturica and was musing whether Borat would lead people to listen to Balkan brass bands.

I too think it's unlikely to bring people to Balkan brass, at least as much as a Kusturika movie would. In part because Borat subverts the music, whereas Kusturika celebrates it.

I completely agree with you vladye . Even though intellectually open people can also laugh at some parts of the movie (i found most of it quite boring though - watching 4-minute clips of it on youtube was much more entertaining), the actual target audience is rather narrow-minded.

I agree with Vladye that there's no reason to compare Borat with Kusturica's films. The goals of the films are different. Like Noizydotnet pointed out, Kusturica celebrates Balkan brass music.

Borat is a satirical film that points out just how ignorant some Americans can be when it comes to other cultures.

I don't know if Borat will make Balkan music popular. Who knows what people will like or what they'd do? People can be unpredictable.

I got into Balkan music because I met a lot of people from the Balkans and just fell in love with them. There's lots of wonderful good natured people from the Balkans. =)

I don't think the majority of people who are watching Borat are going to be paying any attention to the soundtrack. It's a comedy for simple minds. Even when I watched it, although I did love the soundtrack, I didn't notice it much because I was too focused on the humour in the movie.
