  Great great record. Even when it came out back in 1982 it was pretty heavy shit compared to a lot of the pop / dross that was about then (synth pop, rubbish slap bass white funk electro freakouts). Unfairly compared to both Joy Division and Siouxsie, it was nothing like those bands - great though these other bands were. It was, I guess, angst, despair, misery and misanthropy in a class of its own. In releasing their 'darker' albums in years to come, The Cure have been trying to trade on its glories ever since.
