A posthuman or post-human is, according to transhumanist intellectuals, a hypothetical future being "whose basic capacities so radically exceed those of present humans as to be no longer unambiguously human by our current standards."

The difference between the posthuman and other hypothetical sophisticated non-humans is that a posthuman was once a human, either in its lifetime or in the lifetimes of some or all of its direct ancestors. As such, a prerequisite for a posthuman is a transhuman, the point at which the human being begins surpassing his own limitations, but is still recognisable as a human person or similar.

Posthumans could be a symbiosis of human and artificial intelligence, or uploaded consciousnesses, or the result of making many smaller but cumulatively profound technological augmentations to a biological human, i.e. a cyborg. Some examples of the latter are redesigning the human organism using advanced nanotechnology or radical enhancement using some combination of technologies such as genetic engineering, psychopharmacology, life extension therapies, neural interfaces, advanced information management tools, memory enhancing drugs, wearable or implanted computers, and cognitive techniques.

A variation on the posthuman theme is the notion of the "Posthuman God"; the idea that posthumans, being no longer confined to the parameters of "humanness", might grow physically and mentally so powerful as to appear possibly god-like by human standards. This notion should not be interpreted as being related to the idea portrayed in some soft science fiction that a sufficiently advanced species may "ascend" to a superior plane of existence - rather, it merely means that some posthuman being may become so exceedingly intelligent and technologically sophisticated that its behaviour would not possibly be comprehensible to modern humans, purely by reason of their limited intelligence and imagination.

At what point does a human become posthuman? Steven Pinker, a cognitive neuroscientist and author of How the Mind Works, poses the following hypothetical, which is an example of the Ship of Theseus paradox:

"Surgeons replace one of your neurons with a microchip that duplicates its input-output functions. You feel and behave exactly as before. Then they replace a second one, and a third one, and so on, until more and more of your brain becomes silicon. Since each microchip does exactly what the neuron did, your behavior and memory never change. Do you even notice the difference? Does it feel like dying? Is some other conscious entity moving in with you?"



God was a primitive notion invented by superstitious people, people only just beginning to step out of ignorance and unconsciousness. The concept of God has been oppressive: a being more powerful than we, but made in the image of our crude self-conceptions. Our own process of endless progression into higher forms should and will replace this religious idea. Humanity is a temporary stage along the evolutionary pathway. We are not the zenith of nature's development.

    While I confess some sort of attraction to the ideas expressed in the concept of what is called "post0human," I think it more important to work on getting the art of being human right before we even consider the post-human. Because seriously, the place in historical time in which humanity resides is not a good one - not good for humanity, not good for nature, not good for anyone or anything. The potential and super-potential is there for humanity to really get it right, to understand what it takes to live in concert with the Earth and the rest of the cosmos, but we have not come close to actualizing that potential... we just continue to destroy, all the while thinking that we are creating something that will transcend what we think of as human. Humanity is quite deluded...

    I'm not sure if the mediocre people have their consciousness activated at all. Well that's what I think, the body barricades the consciousness, our so called reality. Some realize this, most don't. So maybe it's our job to help the universe understand itself.

    I don't think anyone can give a truthful answer to that question, because I think that would be a matter of believing. I'd like to believe that we are all part of a collective consciousness that becomes one after death. I feel that way because I want so many answers, that can only be answered after we leave "reality", I think. I got a group btw, called consciousness. So if you want to join, barely got any members too, go figure.

    Not necessarily a soul. I believe our "self" comes from our conciousness. My theory about post-humanism is more in the terms of evolution though.

    I only joined because I like the group name (as in ), and am more of a proto-human in myself. The idea of implanting a microchip to achieve superpowers is curious enough though. Therefore I implant myself here in order to assimilate beforehand and sabotage this system from within :P
