    all the time.

it's less stress, but also less fun

it's hard to find someone for every random thing i choose to go see.

i just hope i don't become like the guy in the wheelchair at the mc5 concert in amsterdam on tuesday, old and hardcore and alone and with a bad taste in music, judging by the stickers he had on it.

    cause that would suck

Go on my own about 70% of the time, really I go for the music not a social outing.

i go to gigs solo most of the time, most of my friends only listen to top forty radio, and their one concert of the year will be dreck like robbie williams. i don't mind i wouldn't miss music i want to see

haha, that used to be my case too. 99% of my friends listen to either top 40. or death metal. but i made some cool gig buddies on last.fm so now i only go solo half of the time. (& this is why last.fm rules!)

the only part i hate about going to gigs alone is that it can get pretty scary at night on the way home. =/

I'm old so felt the need to comment.

Taste doesn't really get worse just most people stop listening to new stuff, get stuck listening to the same old stuff they listened to when they were young.

that is a good point, or if you need to find a taxi, it can be next to impossible, especially if you have far to travel

i couldn't agree more, the last cd they bought was 20 years ago and they are damn well happy to stick with that

i used to go to loads of gigs solo when i was married (ex didn't like most of the bands i did so i had to).

then we got divorced, and i had to go on my own due to living in new country (australia) and not knowing anyone.

have partner now that likes similar music but if a gig came up that he didn't want to go to would still go. how could i miss a band i loved just for the sake of having someone to go with? nah, couldn't.

id sure go to a gig solo. but im going to a couple of (my first) festivals early next year - would you guys recommend roping in a friend with open-minded music interests? 8 or so hours solo might get taxing...

yeah having someone at a festival is good, a whole day is a diffent thing to 3 hours at a gig, though you can usually manage to make some new friends, did the big day out once by myself it kind of worked.

I've never been solo before, I've been lucky to force a mate to a gig...but I do indeed find it hard to get a gig partner as my mates don't listen to the same stuff as me :
    It's an unfair world :P

I'd definitely go solo if it was someone I wanted to see, but always prefer to find someone to go with me if possible. Especially at tiny gigs (like at the Spectrum), as I'm more liable to feel like a social failure when alone in such places.

I've been a couple of shows solo. Generally I'm more of a fan of going with people. Luckily I can go with or bump into people I know at shows.

If people's taste gets worse as they get older how long before our taste in music starts to get shit?

Your taste will get really bad by the time your as old as me, especially if you have kids and get a mortgage.

Better go of to see Yo La Tengo by myself, I must be a social failure...

    Social Failure?

It cannot be helped if people you like to hang with don't share the same taste. Did the Animal Collective solo, and was on a high same as when I did Joanna Newsom with a buddy. It's all about the music.

What's worse than going solo? Going with a bunch of ppl you don't click with even if they might like the same artist... it can happen.

play with me. pull my tail.

It's not so much the being alone during the actual set as it is looking like a loser beforehand while the cool kids stare you down. Doesn't stop me from going by myself. It's more fun to spazz out like that, and it's easier to meet new friends.

I was being facetious with the social failure comment. I actually find it more annoying at larger gig.

Going to places like Spectrum, the Hoey and the 'dale alone don't bother me at all, nearly always meet someone there usually someone new.

I hate going to gigs alone, I reckon it's more fun to go with a friend.

But I occasionally go on my own heh.
