"I've never heard anything Wynton [Marsalis] played sound like it meant anything at all. Wynton has no voice and no presence. His music sounds like a talented high-school trumpet player to me... he's jazzy the same way someone who drives a BMW is sporty." -- Keith Jarrett - Couldn't agree more. Jarrett nailed it. Marsalis represents everything that is wrong with modern jazz today.

Anyone know where you can listen to the Dramaten Theater Stockholm, September 1972 album? It was available on Apple Music and Spotify for about a month in 2023 and then it was taken down everywhere - I assume because it wasn't authorized for release - but the solo piano work was incredible. It was peak Jarrett and I would hate to think that the recording will not be available.

Thanks - in the US, the album is listed but its still greyed out and says "Spotify cannot play this right now." I figure he must of sued to have it taken down because it wasn't released through ECM. I will continue my search to find it - it was a remarkable recording and Jarrett was at the height of his improvisation period.

I hate the moaning too, but to be fair to the man, he doesn't really improvise while playing classical music as far as I can tell, and that's what causes him to make those grunts. It's a physical reaction to the spontaneity of his own improvisations. I can't speak to these sidemen gigs since I don't think I've heard any, but if he has to adopt a more submissive role with less improvisational freedom, that would explain it too.

Me realizing we might lose Keith soon makes me sad, but I am forever thankful for the luck that I lived during the same time as him and Chick Corea.

Sadly, we will never see another pianist like Jarrett ever again. Truly, the grand master.

Munich is stunning. Nothing new, but then again, no-one makes a piano sing like Jarrett does.

>"Köln was different, because there were just so many negative things in a row," Mr. Jarrett recalls in the documentary. He had not slept in two nights. The piano he had ordered did not arrive in time for the concert. The one in the hall was substandard, sounding tinny and thin in the outer registers. Mr. Jarrett nearly refused to play, changing his mind at the last minute. Almost as an afterthought, the sound technicians decided to place the mikes and record the concert, even if only for the house archive. Later, longtime friend and record producer Manfred Eicher said: "Probably he played it the way he did because it was not a good piano. Because he could not fall in love with it he found another way to get the most out of it." https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB122367103134923957
