Kp, hatte nix zu tun und hab mal nen Songtext geschrieben für eine neue Band in der ich irgendwann mal wieder spielen werde.. :P Ist noch nicht ganz fertig, bin auf jeden Fall noch nicht 100%ig zufrieden damit, ist ja aber auch nur ein Entwurf... :) Vermutlich wird er, wenn ich ihn als Songtext nehme, ohnehin noch ins Englische umgeschrieben. However, könnt ja mal Feedback geben und Titel vorschlagen.. ;-) Eigentlich sollte er eher apokalyptisch und endzeitmäßig ausfallen, ist aber irgendwie wieder mehr tragisch geworden, was solls, dann beim nächsten :D

So, damit dass hier auch jemand liest mal ein paar Verknüpfungen zu einigen Bands mit deutschen Lyrics:

After using you only a few times since you arrived, I have to say your arrangements are getting worse. At first, they were mostly things I could do with smart playlists by genre. But your new batch of mixes is just bizarre. A few pointers to help you out:

-The term is "post-rock". I've never even heard of "Post-modern Rock", though good mix except for the weird label.

-I don't know what dream pop is, but unless it's suddenly an obtuse (and rather general) term for folk-influenced, I'm pretty sure none of what is in this playlist qualifies (Letzte Instanz, folk metal; Garmarna, swedish folk; Qntal, electro-medieval; Unto Ashes, neofolk).

-"progressive metal" is such a vague term as to not mean much. i.e. you should not group Otyg (bouncy Swedish folk-rock/metal) with Wolves in the Throne Room (pretty intense black metal) and Apocalyptica (thrashy cello-metal).

-Same thing for what you've apparently called "goth". I... no, I won't even try to deconstruct this one.

-How exactly do you pick Fen (atmospheric black metal), Minsk (sludge metal), The Morningside (melodic death/black metal), and ASP (gothic/darkwave metal) and call them all "Mainstream Rock"? I mean, I'm not being a snob here; I just don't see it.

Maybe you'd be better off drawing from last.fm's tag database? Then again, considering some of the brain dead tags that at some point get tacked on to every song (not to mention a plethora of hilarious ones), that's just as likely to turn out ridiculous playlists too (most iTunes users would probably get a "brutal death metal mix", one way or another).

I'm a bit late this year as I've been busier than usual at the end of 2009; nevertheless, here is my choice for the best albums from last year! Again, this is purely based on my taste and experience of these albums, though I do try to justify every choice ;) As I had published 2008's top albums in December, a few of the 2008 late releases could not make it to that list. I included them here as if they were part of 2009. I decided to be a bit more elaborate this time, after seeing the great job II666II did in his own list.

20. Samsas Traum - 13 Jahre Lang Dagegen - Anti Bis Zum Tod



Though Samsas Traum's latest effort is a good album (I don't think I could ever dislike anything by Samsas Traum), this is probably my biggest disappointment this year. I was expecting a lot more from Herr Kaschte, though I shouldn't have: he keeps reinventing himself, his band, and every album is a chance to try playing in a different direction, musically. Well, old school riff-based rock isn't too much my thing in general. I wish the album was less guitar-based, but I still enjoyed this album which surely will please fans of the genre very much - as usual, Kaschte excelled in what he wanted to do.

19. Helium Vola - Für Euch, Die Ihr Liebt



From a disappointment to a happy surprise! As much as I liked the other Helium Vola albums, I don't think they would've made any end of the year-tops. This one does all that was well-done on the other albums, but it sounds slightly less experimental, though it's longer (a great 2CD experience!). In its genre, it sounds highly original yet very accomplished.

18. Editors - In This Light And On This Evening



I wasn't exactly in Editors before this year, though I had heard and kind of liked some of their older stuff. I decided to give a real chance to this album though, listened to the whole thing a couple of times, and I really loved it! The fact they added tons of keyboards to their sound probably helped (yes, I really like keyboards). It also refreshes the Indie genre which was kind of overloaded in the last few years with too many bands sounding the same (though they are not so innovative - it sounds highly influenced by new wave music from the 80s). Songs like Papillon and Eat Raw Meat = Blood Drool convinced me this should be in the top 20. Well, there it is!

17. Saltatio Mortis - Wer Wind Sät



I was highly impressed by Saltatio Mortis' previous album Aus Der Asche, and I was expecting a lot from this new record. Though it doesn't, in my opinion, sound as good as the last one, Wer Wind Sät delivers what one expects of Saltatio Mortis. The mastering isn't as well-rounded as Aus Der Asche, but it still is better than all of their first albums. But again, it delivers what you'd expect from the band, and not much more - good folk rock.

16. Subway to Sally - Kreuzfeuer



With their album Nord Nord Ost, released in 2005, Subway To Sally seemed to have achieved finding their very own, well-rounded, perfectly mastered own style. The following album Bastard was a confirmation of that; it was highly accomplished, took all that STS had done well in their past years and albums and put it all together, removing superfluous elements. I had no clue what to expect from Kreuzfeuer. Maybe rightfully so, they went with continuity and stuck to their well-accomplished style. This time though, the "wow!" element has vanished already, and one could say Kreuzfeuer is a little like Bastard, but a little less good. Which still makes it really good. But it might be a sign that they should try to keep making their sound evolve in new directions, now.

15. Lacrimosa - Sehnsucht



The wait for this Lacrimosa album was long! The amazing live album Lichtjahre made fans wait, but new material hadn't come in a long time. The anticipation usually leads to higher expectations. Tilo Wolff rarely goes totally wrong, and he definitely hasn't gone wrong with Sehnsucht. I admit I didn't enjoy it as much as Echos or Lichtgestalt, but still not much can be said against Sehnsucht, such high quality music should only be encouraged by all means. Go and give it a listen, and pay true attention to it, you shouldn't be too disappointed!

14. Zeromancer - Sinners International



Well, talk about anticipation! If it had been long since Lacrimosa's last album, it had been forever since Zeromancer released anything! They had announced new material several years ago already on their website, had released new songs on singles in 2008, and finally, the new album came out in 2009. Is the album good? Yes, very much. Is its quality proportional to the wait that led to it? No. In fact, I think their ZZYZX album remains their best, but Sinners International, though too short, delivers exactly what one expects from Zeromancer. Fans have no reason to be disappointed, though it doesn't sound very daring for guys who had released their last album 5 years before.

13. Metallspürhunde - Böse Wetter



Now, here is one of my good surprises of the year! I had liked the last MSH album (Amokherz) much better than the previous ones, but Böse Wetter seems to be the best by far, now. They now seem to master their own sound really well, and the product is perfectly finished and mixed this time. They are now a must for every Neue Deutsche Härte fan - they bring originality to the genre, while using everything that makes it as good as it is.

12. Mina Harker - Tiefer



Tiefer is the first of the 2 albums I included in this list that were released in 2008. It's Mina Harker's first album, though she worked with various artists in the past, including Laibach and OOMPH! - actually one of the songs featured Dero from OOMPH! on Tiefer. Most songs are pretty catchy, though at first many might sound quite similar, and for sure there's a "commercial" feel to it, which makes it very accessible and quickly enjoyable. However, emotions do get through pretty well and I found the ambiance the song Dein Licht created is totally perfect. It might be a subjective experience, but it feels to me like the song recreates a feeling which I cannot even name precisely, some sort of melancholic yet partly happy mood, put into music. I also need to mention Tränen - these 2 songs on their own certainly made the album rank a lot higher on this list.

11. IAMX - Kingdom Of Welcome Addiction



I mostly knew IAMX for their song Spit It Out, which I loved, but I wasn't too familiar with the rest of their stuff. I gave this album a try and had very mixed feelings about it at first, but after giving it a real chance and a bunch of listens, I found I absolutely loved it. It might sound a bit too calm overall for fans of the genre, or as I thought at first, one might first feel it would win by the addition of more guitars. I quickly changed my mind though, the album is great as it is, and a song like The Great Shipwreck of Life shows Chris Corner knows how to use guitars when he really needs to ;) Running is also amazing, it captivated me right away with its contemplative mood.

10. Depeche Mode - Sounds Of The Universe



Though I know they are legends and incredibly hyped, I never was a huge Depeche Mode fan (though I never had anything against them, really). I think they got criticized by fans for using electric guitar on this album, on songs like Fragile Tension. I guess what disappoints others rejoices me - this is precisely what I particularly loved about this album, and Fragile Tension might be my favourite song on there... Though it's hard to decide - one can see they have been doing this job for long, they sure know how to construct a song that will please lots of people. Their melodies are catchy, pleasant, easy to sing, and the mastering and mixing are perfect. Good job DM!

9. Mono Inc. - Voices Of Doom



I just discovered Mono Inc. this year and I really loved their 2008 album Pain, Love and Poetry. Voices Of Doom doesn't change much to the style of the other, but I think it wasn't much needed, as they have already reached a good level of originality within their own genre. The unique vocals make Mono Inc.'s particularity... I have a hard time comparing their singer to any other voice I've heard, and he also has a very unique way of singing and pronouncing. Musically, they do nothing overly original, but their style of music is one that particularly pleases me, and they do it damn well!

8. Letzte Instanz - Schuldig



Ever since their (awesome) singer Robin has left, Letzte Instanz have very quickly evolved, and Holly, the new singer, probably tried to make sure that as awesome as Robin was, Letzte Instanz didn't depend on him. With Schuldig, I can finally say I do not miss Robin a single bit anymore. Ins Licht was very good, yet a little something was missing. Wir Sind Gold was really awesome... some fans thought it was a bit too soft, but softer doesn't mean worse. I still had a hard time forgetting how good and original Robin's voice was... now, I can say they gave me a good way to forget. Schuldig is accomplished in a way I didn't even think Letzte Instanz could reach. Except the cover art, which I find quite ugly, but visual art is not what I'm reviewing here. It has depth, lots of it, nice melodies, but also all the good elements that made Letzte Instanz's fame in the past, like the violin and the cello. Most incredibly, it has a lot of original "hit-songs" that I could easily see as first singles from an album: Komm!, Der Garten (feat. Aylin Aslim) or Finsternis, not to mention their actual first single Flucht Ins Glück (though ironically, this song didn't impress me as much). I can now hardly see how Letzte Instanz will ever get better, but hey, they might as well impress me again!

7. Farin Urlaub Racing Team - Die Wahrheit Übers Lügen



Here is the second album from 2008 in my list. It took me a lot of time to appreciate this album fully, especially as Am Ende Der Sonne, Farin Urlaub's last solo album, had fulfilled every expectation I had. Die Wahrheit Übers Lügen went into another direction, making it more similar to the first album. More upbeat, happier, yet a lot more rocking than the first album (and with shorter songs mostly). It might have helped that I had lots and lots of fun playing it on guitar, but I ended up falling in love with it in the summer (6 months after its release). I think it probably is a summer album, meant to be enjoyed in the warm sun, with a good cup of iced tea. My new motto: ich find das gut!

6. Rammstein - Liebe Ist Für Alle Da



Don't get fooled, for a Rammstein album to not even make it to the top 5 of my yearly charts can be seen as a big flop, kind of. And I feel like I'm going to rant a lot about it, but let it be said: if Rammstein was a new band, I would think this album is really really good, and promising for the future of the band. But let's face it: Rammstein isn't a new band, they are the ones who composed Sehnsucht... Reise, Reise, and the huge masterwork that is Mutter!!. I am not able to not compare, because their older works show their actual potential. And Liebe Ist Für Alle Da, in this way, is a big disappointment for me. It's a great album, and that's pretty much all there is to it. I could write a long review of it, but to wrap it up quickly, I can't believe a song like B******** could actually be preferred to something like Donaukinder for the main CD. Maybe they decided heavier and more aggressive meant better. I disagree. The opening track starts really well with an awesome intro, then gets a bit boring (I mean, the opening track itself gets boring). Then, the album has ups and downs. It has some great highlights (Ich tu dir weh, Frühling in Paris), but overall, it seems to me like it lacks polishing. If you listen to Mutter 50 times closely, with every listen, you'll discover new things that give depth to the songs, it's an amazing job of orchestration they have done. LIFAD has no depth at all, the only element they seemed to really care about was the "in-your-face!" element. I'm not even going to talk about Pussy, because I don't think it deserves to be talked about. Lyrically, of course - musically, it's pretty good, yet quite unoriginal. I could rant on for a while. Then, why put it #6, above all these other great albums, might you rightfully so ask. Well, because despite all the rants deserved when compared to masterworks like Mutter, it remains a really good album overall. Just don't play the comparison game with older Rammstein material. Please note I take the bonus limited CD into account here, because they contain some of the best quality tracks of the album. And I don't mean the 2 (not-so) different versions of Roter Sand (I can't stand that whistling on three songs within 30mins, come on!).

5. U2 - No Line On The Horizon



It took me a whole lot of time to get into this U2 album. It isn't quite as commercial or accessible as their previous works, and many listens are necessary to fully enjoy it. However, I can now say that as a whole it is my favourite U2 album. Not many tracks are absolutely amazing on their own, except maybe Magnificent, but taken as one work, from an end to the other of the album, it is incredibly enjoyable. It makes you go through many moods, it is very well constructed, played with intelligence and experience, and it leave a very positive feeling overall. If one negative remark could be said, Get On Your Boots is the worst song of the album, and I can't believe it was the first single. And I really, really do not get why people compare it a lot to Vertigo - to me it sounds nowhere like it. Nowhere. But that song is the only complaint I can have about the whole thing, really ;)

4. Dúné - Enter Metropolis



I discovered Dúné in concert only 2 years ago, and while their pop-punk element was quite good on their first album, what really made them stick out is their awesome use of keyboards, which they found a way to use a whole lot in a way I had never heard in that genre. While I liked the first album, I didn't spent too much time stuck on it, it might have lacked some depth. For sure, I would never have bet on their next one making my top 20 albums of the year. Enter Metropolis totally caught me, and I couldn't help listening to it 2, 3... 4 times a day, for... well... several weeks! I just couldn't help it. I had the songs running in my head day and night. One by one, I started loving every song more than the other, and ended up not knowing which I preferred. A few do stand out, but overall, most of the album terribly caught me. Let yourself be warned: if you are allergic to anything that sounds commercial and catchy, you won't like this album. You might like their first one, though. Enter Metropolis sees the band get a much fuller and accomplished sound. I like it, but many might see it as a sellout thing. Thankfully, the originality of their style survived, and their use of keyboards still is quite unique. I never really got tired of it like one usually get of "pop" music - several months after, I still enjoy it just as much, and I rediscover it with every listen.

3. Muse - The Resistance



At first, The Resistance disappointed me a bit. At this point, I could say Muse might be my favourite band overall, and my expectations were immense. Uprising, the first single, was good, yet not as good as their best songs of the past. With time, I ended up adopting the album, and deciding it is a pretty damn awesome album, though when compared to Origin Of Symmetry or Absolution, it is weaker. Let's get through with the bad things: it's too short. They divided an awesome 15mins orchestral thing into 3, as it seems, to make it appear as if there were more songs, but in fact, it's a quite short album. And the symphonic track should be all together as a whole. Now, the good stuff. Every song is really, really different in style. Not only did they care about renewing themselves compared to older albums, but they also took care of the actual album being very varied in styles, which is not so easy for an artist with a strong fan base like them, as it is a bit risky. Every song has its reason to be on the album and seems essential to it, I guess that's the nice part of having a shorter album (which is not THAT short either). It would probably be nice to have a few more rocking tracks, but one can album go back to Absolution for that. As a short side-note, I am a huge fan of most past Muse music videos, but the ones from The Resistance didn't impress me at all, sadly, they seemed a bit rushed.

2. Down Below - Wildes Herz



I wouldn't have imagined having Down Below so high on my yearly list, but their latest album Wildes Herz hit me exactly at the right place. They did exactly the style of music that I love, in the way I love it - and they stopped singing in English to give full place for German, which for me is a big plus. This appreciation of the album is pretty personal. A perfect mix of NDH, indie, rock, and catchy melodies and singing. All of it produced perfectly, with a failureless mixing (the best example would be the song Wildes Herz). Well, there you go, this recipe would probably get me every time, but sadly for me, it's quite rare to have such combination so well executed. I never get tired of it, it's stronger than me! ;)

1. Apoptygma Berzerk - Rocket Science



Talking about a perfect mix of NDH, indie, rock and catchy melodies, that's exactly what Apop had delivered with their last album You And Me Against The World, which had ranked as my top album of 2005. Well, they struck again with Rocket Science, and though there is some continuity in the sound, there is also a big change, somehow. The "theme" of the album (conspiracy theories, mostly though not entirely) has gotten me to wonder about tons of things, and do lots of research on my own for several weeks, and saying it was very interesting would be an understatement. Tons of things could be said about it here, but it's not really the purpose of this journal entry. Musically, it is a little more diverse than You And Me Against The World. Songs on their own stick a little more out, while as a whole, the album seems a little less of a musical "experience". But track-by-track, it impressed me a lot, and I got totally addicted to it after a bunch of listens. Asleep or Awake? was my alarm clock song for several months, and I'm still not tired of it, miraculously. The more I listened to Green Queen, the more I could enjoy to the full the blast of energy it delivers. State of Your Heart (Sh*t End of the Deal) is absolutely beautiful, its melody creates instantly emotions in me, which are hard to describe, but which I see as a continuation of the feelings in Lost in Translation from the previous album, which is one of my favourite songs ever. To me, it makes no doubt that all around (considering the music, lyrics, etc.), this is the best release of the year. Though getting properly into it took me some time, it was well worth it.

1. GRINDCORE/DEATH METAL



Не скажу, что выбор в этой номинации был для меня сколько-нибудь мучительным, несмотря на достаточно большое количество номинантов. Survivors Zero как проект - дебютант 2009 года, но самих музыкантов новичками на металлической сцене не назвать, достаточно сказать, что в состав входят участники Finntroll, Deathchain, Belial, Impaled Nazarene, The Scourger... Помнится, я сожалел, что Tapio Wilska ушел из Finntroll басистом в какой-то проект, лучше б, конечно, остался вокалистом в Троллях, но, оказывается, он выбрал более чем достойный коллектив. Дебют Survivors Zero - мощный, бескомпромиссный, превосходного качества Death Metal, в моих глазах (ушах) оставивший позади всех своих потенциальных конкурентов.

2. MELODIC DEATH METAL



Достаточно спорный выбор, потому что 2009 год принес более чем достаточное количество классных релизов в этом стиле, причем релизов, несомненно, более высокого качества и мастерства исполнения, чем мой победитель, поэтому постараюсь объяснить свои мотивы:
Во-первых, ребята не боятся экспериментировать и в своей дебютной работе (хочу это подчеркнуть) смешали melodic death с folk'ом, достаточно академичными клавишами и еще многими фишками, в которых узнаются и System of a Down и Die Apokalyptischen Reiter, кстати, аналогия с последними и оказала немалое влияние на мой выбор, потому что Reiter'ы, вплоть до выпуска Licht'а (последнего на данный момент альбома группы) являлись одной из моих любимых групп, а тут такое продолжение традиций, причем именно старых традиций, времен All You Need Is Love. Конечно же, я не мог пройти мимо такого и никак не отметить.
Во-вторых, возвращаясь к тому, что ребята новички и работа дебютная, я считаю это прорывом, не больше и не меньше. Конечно, работать музыкантам надо еще очень много, чтобы довести качество материала до мирового уровня и зарекомендовать себя как действительно уникальную творческую единицу, но шаг в нужном направлении они сделали и хочется пожелать им дальнейших успехов.

3. BLACK METAL



Составляя список номинантов в этом стиле, я с удивлением обнаружил, что в ушедшем году послушал около сотни black металлических альбомов, так что пришлось разделить на 2 номинации, что не сильно облегчило выбор. Еще одним наблюдением уже при выборе победителя оказалось мое тяготение к прогрессивному направлению стиля (все мои основные претенденты были прогрессивны в большей или меньшей степени). Этот релиз я выбрал прежде всего из-за его сбалансированности, в нем есть всё: мастерское исполнение, агрессия, в меру прогрессивная на мой вкус музыкальная составляющая и сильный вокал. Вспоминая главных конкурентов, могу сказать, что альбом Klabautamann оказался слишком прогрессивным для меня (что не умаляет его достоинств, но тем не менее...), а Geist очень атмосферным (не в коем случае не в минус, просто мне не хватало развития событий, что ли), поэтому я и остановил свой выбор именно на этой работе.

4. SYMPHO/MELODIC BLACK METAL



Sycronomica полюбились мне с выпуска прошлого альбома Gate, новой же работой они только укрепили во мне веру о том, что это одна из лучших групп в своем стиле. Вот как должен звучать melodic black metal! Альбом слушается как единое целое с одной стороны и достаточно разнообразен с другой. Особенно хочу отметить академический вокал (который присутствует практически повсеместно наряду со скримом), не знаю, приглашенный ли то вокалист или штатный, но звучит потрясающе, надеюсь, в будущих работах ребята не только его сохранят, но и станут использовать более активно, он, безусловно, создает нужное настроение и разнообразит материал.

5. DOOM/POST METAL



Победителем в этой номинации у меня стала группа, которую называют "отцами" Gothic Metal'а, тем не менее, на данном релизе готики я не нашел и определил именно сюда. Да, были хорошие Doom и Death Doom работы, но Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us как-то затягивает и не дает возможности поверхностно ознакомиться с материалом. Профессиональная, зрелая работа, какой она, наверное, и должна была выйти у Paradise Lost.

6. DARK/EXPERIMENTAL METAL



Довольно сумбурная номинация вышла, в которую у меня вошло много чего от Autumnblaze и Ajattara до Panzerballett и Diablo Swing Orchestra... Победа уходит Samsas Traum наверное потому, что это Samsas Traum, ничего не могу с собой поделать - вторая любимая группа после Rammstein. Как водится, Каште дважды не повторяет и, на этот раз решил смешать Dark Metal и Death'n'Roll, что из этого вышло и можете узнать, послушав альбом. Кстати, релиз приурочен к 13-тилетию проекта и по сути полноценным ST альбомом не является, а скорее тяготит к сборнику неальбомных композиций (несмотря на то, что все песни новые и на писаны специально для этого релиза). Альбомные песни ST от неальбомных отличаются, прежде всего, построением, так вот здесь построение неальбомное (читай "более простое"). Тем не менее, хочется сказать "Rock on!" и не заморачиваться))

7. PAGAN/VIKING METAL



Несмотря на достаточно большое количество сильных релизов в данном стиле Obscurity не дали ни единого шанса своим конкурентам. Varar предлагает слушателю своеобразный военный поход (о чем и говорит нам артворк): маршевые мелодии, гитарные рифы местами приближающиеся к industrial metal'у, мощная энергетика, плотный звук и полностью немецкоязычная лирика - вот что отличает эту работу.

8. FOLK ROCK/METAL



Наверное, самое неожиданное и вместе с тем интересное решение. Действительно, из ряда вон выходящая для меня, как для любителя немецкой музыки и в какой-то степени противника американской школы, ситуация, что альбомом года в такой номинации как folk rock/metal становится группа из Соединенных Штатов, но они этого на 100% достойны. Немецкие "флагманы" стиля типа Subway to Sally и Saltatio Mortis (как и чуть менее известные их коллеги) не порадовали ничем новым, так если первые выпустили альбом с половиной проходных песен, а вторые просто в очередной раз переработали свои идеи и выпустили релиз не самого высокого качества, не говоря уже о оригинальности. Возвращение "в свет" Morgenstern оказалось достойным, но не триумфальным, все же хорошие релизы были, но в восторг не повергли. Что касается Abney Park, то они для меня оказались чем-то свежим. По сути это не совсем фольк и уж точно не металл, скорее steam punk с фольковым влиянием, сочетание оказалось отличным, то есть достаточно большое количество электроники, плотный звук перемежаются с фольковыми мотивами и все это в сопровождении действительно хорошего вокала, идеально вписывающегося в музыкальную концепцию. В общем, продукт "не для всех", наверное, но от этого только более привлекательный.

9. FOLK/ACOUSTIC



Здесь сюрприза не произошло и я этому рад. Вторая полноформатная работа Neun Welten была мной ожидаема и ожидания оправдала. Те, кто слышал дебютную работу vergessene Pfade, знают, какого уровня инструментальную акустическую музыку пишут ребята. Новый альбом продолжил традиции, кардинально ничего не поменялось, разве что стал чуть больше использоваться вокал (если на первом альбоме он был в 1-ой композиции, то здесь он присутствует где-то примерно в 3-х), но по прежнему вокал выступает в роли еще одного инструмента и не перетягивает внимание на себя. Единственное, я не обнаружил в Destrunken хитов типа "Auf kargem Fels", в остальном же альбом отличный и слушается очень легко.

10. THRASH/GROOVE/SOUTHERN METAL



Со времени своего прошлого релиза Macbeth сделали заметный шаг к самосовершенствованию, по большей части именно за это развитие они и получают у меня 1-ое место. Учитывая, что треш все-таки не мой стиль, могу сказать, что альбом вышел хорошим, не отличным, но хорошим, поэтому дифирамб я петь не буду, лишь скажу, что если группа и дальше будет так развиваться, то уже следующая работа выведет их на новый уровень.

11. SYMPHO/EPIC METAL



В эту номинацию у меня попали в основном группы с женским вокалом, не все, но большинство. Как многим известно, бывшая вокалистка Elis (Sabine Duenser) скончалась (пусть земля ей будет пухом), и на её место пришла Sandra Schleret, хорошо известная по таким проектам как Dreams of Sanity и Siegfried. Последние, кстати, тоже выпустили в этом году альбом, фактом чего очень меня порадовали с одной стороны (ведь прошлая их работа Eisenwinter мне очень нравилась, и я ждал продолжения), а с другой стороны крайне огорчили тем, что Nibelung оказался гораздо слабее предшественника. Возвращаясь к Elis, хочу сказать, что такого материала я от них совершенно не ожидал, ведь до сей поры большим поклонником не являлся (да и небольшим тоже). Музыкальная составляющая альбома отлично записана и спродюссирована, многие песни имеют достаточно сильный хитовый потенциал, к примеру, I Come Undone, вокал же вообще выше всяких похвал, на данный момент я считаю Сандру лучшей вокалисткой на немецкой сцене. Желаю удачи Elis в новом составе, думаю теперь они добьются еще большего и надеюсь, что Сандра продолжит работать с Siegfried, которые обдумают пути музыкального развития и все же порадуют еще чем-нибудь в духе Eisenwinter или даже лучше.

12. HARD/HEAVY/POWER/MELODIC METAL



Что тут скажешь, опыт и мастерство берут свое. Единственное, хочу отметить конкурентов в данной номинации - немецкую формацию Powerwolf, которая выпустила в этом году альбом Bible of the Beast, причем вообще-то я не люблю ни heavy, ни power, но этот альбом правда классный, определенно один из лучших в стиле. Мало того, что ребята с юмором отнеслись к канонам, так они еще сделали это на высочайшем профессиональном уровне, за что им огромный респект. Но на первом месте у меня все же Amorphis. Да, Skyforger вышел не идеальным, проходные вещи есть, но в целом альбом слушается легко и приятно, и как уже говорил - опыт и мастерство))

13. METALCORE/DEATHCORE/RAPCORE



В мире большей известностью и популярностью пользуется англоязычная музыка, оно и понятно, исключением не являются и немецкие metalcore команды. Всем хорошо известны и Caliban и Maroon, и многие другие, немецкоязычных же групп данного направления очень немного, тем приятнее, что Narziss делают эту музыку на родном языке, причем, не подстраиваясь под модные течения, а находясь на своей волне. Для меня самый классный, предельно искренний и честный альбом, записанный на высоком уровне. При выборе у меня не было ни малейших сомнений, Echo - лучший metalcore альбом года.

14. ALTERNATIVE/GRUNGE/NU METAL



Вот с более легким жанром было чуть больше вопросов, хотя всё тоже определилось достаточно быстро, достаточно было просто послушать несколько работ и сравнить между собой, чтобы сомнения отпали. Среди главных конкурентов Emil Bulls я назову новые альбомы Rootwater и Kontrust, но если они для меня вышли приблизительно ровными, то Emil Bulls задели и запомнились своими, запоминающимися практически сразу, мелодиями (если хотите, хитовостью), отличным настроением и качеством исполнения. Лёгкая, приятная работа, которую можно переслушивать, не уставая. Причем, хочу отметить, что раньше я их не слышал, тем приятнее было открыть для себя еще одну хорошую группу

15. HARDCORE/PUNK



Новым альбомом в том году порадовали и Fliehende Stürme, сделав, Как обычно сдержанный, интеллигентный depressive punk, слушать работу достаточно легко и приятно, за что релиз и выходит на первое место.

16. INDUSTRIAL/CYBER METAL



Industrial Metal - один из моих самых любимых стилей и я рад, что выбор в нем не был столь очевидным, ведь в прошлом году вышло около 10-ка хороших релизов, хотя основными претендентами на победу в номинации у меня были 2 альбома - это Die! - Still и, как не трудно догадаться, собственно Eisheilig - Imperium. Die! был, безусловно, ожидаемым релизом, потому что демками нас мучили уже довольно долго и наконец альбом все-таки вышел, и появилась возможность оценить его целиком. Напомню, что новым вокалистом, пришедшим на смену Оливеру Юнгу, стал Mathias “Jablonski” Elsholz (ex-Megaherz,Twelve After Elf), и со своими обязанностями он справился, как и ожидалось, на отлично, придав Die! некоторый налет экспериментальности и узнаваемые нотки альбома "5" Megaherz. И всё же на альбоме есть как абсолютно шикарные, пробивные вещи, так и проходной материал, и в общем как единое целое релиз мною не воспринимается. Eisheilig же выпустили монолит, причем если позапрошлый альбом Elysium одной фразой можно было описать как "так бы звучал Rammstein, если бы они играли Doom" (действительно параллелей с поздними Rammstein можно было провести предостаточно), то на новом альбоме мне слышаться еще и нотки Laibach (причем не только из-за спецэффической манеры подачи текста). Ни дума, ни готики как таковых тут нет, я бы охарактеризовал стиль как sympho industrial Metal. В итоге работа вышла монолитной, монументальной и, как я уже писал выше, цельной.

17. INDUSTRIAL/EBM/DARK ELECTRO



Ситуация в какой-то мере аналогичная номинации folk rock/metal, с той лишь разницей, что победа досталась все же немцам. А схожесть состоит в том, что те, на кого были возложены опредеоенные надежды, подвели. Я говорю, прежде всего, о Agonoize и Nachtmahr, с другой стороны многообещающим кажется дебют herzschlag, думаю, в дальнейшем они выйдут на один уровень со своими более популярными коллегами по dark-electro цеху. Anonymous же задвинул всех на второй план своей агрессивностью, четкостью, целостностью. Самый мощный электро-релиз ушедшего года, так уж получилось, что ничего, кроме него я у Tyske Ludder не слышал, но теперь буду высоко котировать их и ждать следующей работы.

18. GOTHIC METAL



Да, за свою историю Letzte Instanz прошли несколько ступеней развития (точнее 3, которые практически совпадают со сменой вокалистов). Начинали с фолк-рока, потом стали ближе к альтернативе, и вот теперь я отнес их к готике, точнее к готик металлу. Да, состав за все время менялся довольно часто и это касается не только вокалистов и сейчас, если я не ошибаюсь, из оригинального состава остались только двое музыкантов, но тем не менее Letzte Instanz всегда умудрялись сохранять оригинальность, находясь на границах стилей и не позволяя однозначно отнести себя ни к одному направлению. К новому составу (точнее непосредственно к вокалисту) я отнесся скептически, потому что считаю Robin'а одним из лучших вокалистов немецкой сцены, тем не менее, Ins Lichtвышел вполне достойной работой. А вот последовавший за ним Wir Sind Gold явно поспешно выпущенным материалом, после которого скепсиса, конечно же, прибавилось, но вот, совершенно неожиданно для меня, выходит потрясающий, лучший в новой истории группы альбом Schuldig! И этому факту я очень рад, но с другой стороны есть мнение, что свой творческий потенциал данный состав этим альбомом исчерпал и ничего лучше не выпустит... что ж, поживем - увидим, а пока их звездный час

19. GOTHIC/DEATH ROCK



Долгожданная многими работа, вот только большинством, опять же, достойно не принятая, ведь ожидалось продолжение Sinmachine, а вышел довольно хулиганский альбом, с привлечением фигур готик рок сцены. Тем не менее, сочетание такого вот настроя с классным качеством звука (а не как это часто бывает в готик роке) и налетом поп музыки 80-х показалось мне очень "вкусным". Еще не могу не сказать пару слов о новых работах Untoten, в которых я наконец-то услышал воплощение тех идей, к которым проект шел все годы и альбомы своего существования, по-моему, только сейчас им удалось донести то, что они хотели донести до слушателя в подобающем обрамлении. Если бы не Ник, победа досталась бы им

20. DARKWAVE/NEOCLASSICAL/MARTIAL



Здесь, сделав этот выбор, я наверняка не окажусь оригинальным. Действительно, интересные работы в стиле были, но Diary of Dreams который год держат марку и отступать с музыкального Олимпа не собираются, каждый раз умудряясь придать новые краски до боли известной манере исполнения и стилю. Слава им и почет)) Также хотелось бы отметить превосходный дебют нового проекта Освальда Хенке - fetisch:MENSCH, славно продолжившего традиции классического периода Goethes Erben, и необычный, оригинальный релиз греков Tethrippon с одноименным названием. Дальнейших успехов я желаю и им, и, естественно, жду новых работ

21. SYNTH GOTHIC



Выбор в этой номинации оказался одним из самых легких, потому как серьезных конкурентов у Totengräber'а в общем-то и не было, разве что новички Phase III, но Soko Friedhof обошел и их. Мне электронная сторона творчества Дэвида Лайна всегда импонировала, проект развивается, становится с каждым релизом всё интереснее оригинальнее, вот и Totengräber вышел лучше своих предшественников и заслуженно получает первое место. Кстати, вспоминая то, что я писал о новых релизах Untoten могу сказать, что год у Дэвида Лайна был более чем удачным в творческом плане.

22. INDIE/POP ROCK



Участников немецкого конкурса песни Bundesvision, видимо, так вдохновил успех сингла Sand in meiner Hand на этом же конкурсе (напомню, они заняли 3-тье место), что никогда прежде не исполнявшая на немецком группа (за исключением пары куплетов) решила выпустить полностью немецкоязычный альбом, наполнив его треками аля Sand in meiner Hand. Что ж, желание дотянуться до заветной славы вполне понятно и мной не возбраняется. Так вот написали и выпустили ребята вполне качественный поп рок на родном языке, правда вот хитов уровня SIMH я таки не обнаружил, хотя стилистика песен выдержана крайне близкая и я вообще был удивлен, когда не увидел этой песни в трек-листе. Не знаю, до чего они доиграются, продолжая в том же духе, но на данный момент всё хорошо.

23. SYNTH/FUTURE/-POP



Нет, синтухой Rotersand не назвать, скорее future pop/EBM, хотя сути это не меняет. В целом альбом вышел хорошим, а в частности есть вообще отличные треки, правда версия песни We Will Kill Them All c EP мне понравилась больше, но не это важно, а важно то, что объективно - самый профессиональный и идущий в ногу со временем future pop. Единственным конкурентом для меня был альбом Lasso от 2raumwohnung, но за исключением шедевральных Wir werden sehen и заглавной Lasso релиз оказался слегка монотонным, поэтому победа ушла Rotersand.

24. "BEST OF" OF THE YEAR



Лучший сборник лучшего, говорить тут особо не о чем, просто приятный релиз, к сожалению, мне так и не удалось послушать аналогичный релиз Chamber, потенциально он вполне мог бы конкурировать с детищем Шиндлера, но значит не судьба.

25. LIVE ALBUM



А тут можно рассказывать очень долго, ведь культовый персонаж немецкой дарк-сцены - Черный Бабочк наконец-то показался мировой общественности по средствам запечатления своего акустического концерта на DVD! Это, конечно сарказм, но на самом деле очень приятно было смотреть и слушать это выступление, несмотря на наличие довольно нудных вещей из последнего "шедеврального" альбома, концертник вышел очень приятным, не только профессиональным, но добрым и теплым по атмосфере, таким домашним и уютным :) Так и представляется, как Шпренг пишет очередную страшилку в теплом халате и пушистых тапочках за чашкой горячего шоколада ;)

26. EP/SINGLE



Лучший сингл и ипишку я выбирал исходя из разных критериев: сингл - именно как заглавную песню, EP - по всему наполнению релиза. Начнем, пожалуй, с EP'шника от Мартина Шиндлера: Факт возвращения проекта Mantus меня порадовал, а вот сам Requiem неожиданно огорчил, тем больше, что именно неожиданно, но, к счастью, Мартин реабилитировался в моих глазах, выпустив EP Königreich der Angst, материал которого лично мне кажется на голову выше альбомного. И вот теперь Mantus готовит очередной полноформатник, очень надеюсь, что Мартин на этот раз возьмет только лучшие идеи, и еще хотелось бы, чтобы он не забросил так удачно дебютировавший проект Sepia. Итак, теперь сингл: сколько было ожиданий, какой длительный период от НИХ не было ничего слышно и вот - первый официальный сингл после перерыва в деятельности – Pussy, и вместе с ним множество восторгов и негодования в среде фанатов и любителей. Я, как несложно было догадаться, отношусь к группе восторженных, да я и не сомневался в том, что Раммы снова дадут жару в свойственном им стиле. Первое место за "наконец-то!" и деликатное напоминание о том, что у кого-то есть пи*да, а у меня х*й

27. COMPILATION



Лучшей компиляцией года я без сомнений называю трибьют, приуроченный к 20-тилетию немецких реперов (hip-hop?) Die Fantastischen Vier или попросту Fanta4. В 2-хдисковом трибьюте приняли участие такие команды как In Extemo, Oomph!, Knorkator, Revolverheld, Extrabreit и многие другие, представив свои версии треков фантастической четверки. Вышло (стильно, модно, молодежно)... да просто круто!

Клип года ;) Выдержан в духе сарказма песни, чем и импонирует (да, да, именно этим и импонирует=) )

29. BEST ARTWORK



30. RUZONE



Специальная номинация, в которой я выбирал лучший релиз российской сцены и стран СНГ. Возможно, выбор и был бы мучительным, но новый альбом Невидь отринул все потенциальные сомнения. Не скажу, что я именно "слежу" за творчеством Невидь, но релизы не пропускаю, поэтому мне есть с чем сравнивать. Что удивило сразу, так это то, что ни нотки pagan'а я не обнаружил и это здорово в том плане, что группа стала оригинальней, ребята не стоят на месте, развиваются своим собственным путем, обозначим стиль альбома как extreme folk metal. Да, в целом релиз вышел довольно эпичным и пафосным, но стоит ли за это винить? По-моему нет. Мне такая подача в купе с отличным исполнением и качеством очень даже пришлась по вкусу. Разве что вставки с чтением стихов несколько смутили в отм плане, что, наверное, могли бы быть эмоциональней, как-то больше красок стоило добавить, что ли, раз уж решили прибегнуть к таким переходам, но это уже мелочи, не способные повлиять на окончательное мнение. Отличный во всех отношениях релиз.





Вот мы и подошли к самому главному – альбому года! Им, вне всяких сомнений, становится новая, шестая по счету, полноформатная работа немецкого секстета Liebe ist für alle da. Почти 4 года я ждал этого события и вот, 16 октября состоялся релиз. Конечно, радости не было предела, причем радость эта была далеко не беспочвенна, ведь помимо самого факта выхода альбома, она была вызвана тем материалом, который я на нем услышал. Но обо всем по порядку. Чтобы вникнуть в альбом по настоящему мне пришлось достаточно много раз его прослушать (занятие было крайне приятным, надо отметить), но даже после этого я отказывался выносить окончательный вердикт, не послушав альбом на оригинальном носителе. Но оригинальный немецкий Special Edition у меня лежит уже довольно давно, да и эйфории по поводу выхода уже не чувствуется, а значит можно оценить альбом на холодную голову.
Итак, начинается альбом с Rammlied, являющейся своеобразной квинтэссенцией творчества группы. Песенка очень скромная и непретенциозная, в ней говорится, чтобы слушатель приготовился к возвращению легенды, всего-то. Не самая сильная вещь на альбоме, но как открывашка (особенно на концертах) просто идеальна. За ней следует Ich tue Dir Weh, с которой уже связан мелкий скандальчик и которая в свою очередь является вторым синглом, выход которого намечен уже на февраль года текущего. Песня в фирменном стиле Rammstein – безусловный хит, так что выход сингла был вполне предсказуем. Расслабиться не дает и следующий трек – Waidmann’s Heil. Эх, сколько крови у меня ушло, пока я его переводил, но сейчас не об этом. Написанная на несколько адаптированный стих Тилля Sautod из сборника Messer, песня еще раз доказывает, что трубы в металле звучат круто. Быстрая, энергичная, взрывная – она держит в напряжении и не отпускает слушателя до самого конца, интересной находкой для Rammstein в ней также является стилизация бриджа перед припевом под народные мотивы. Подхватывает эстафету Haifisch – настоящий сюрприз, ведь лично я не ожидал услышать на альбоме композицию аля Personal Jesus от Depeche Mode. Еще одна песня «от Rammstein и про Rammstein» на этот раз о единстве и дружбе. Кстати, не ожидал, что на эту неё будет сниматься видео и выпустят одноименный сингл, но уже есть такая информация и она официальна, так что ждем. Название следующей композиции остается нечитаемым вплоть до непосредственного прослушивания, да и после понятней не становится, потому что B******** (Bueckstabue) – слово, придуманное Тиллем, и толкования его он не дает. Песня вышла мощной, злой, агрессивной, и я провожу параллели между ней и Mein Teil. Хотелось бы, чтобы на неё тоже сняли видео и выпустили сингл, как это водится. Тем временем альбом приближается к середине и настает время первой баллады – Frühling in Paris. Мягкая и спокойная она постепенно набирает обороты, как бы накаляя страсти. Одной из особенностей песни является также то, что пару строчек припева Тилль поет на французском, немного, но приятно. Следующая композиция долгое время была для меня одной из самых неоднозначных на альбоме, по началу даже (о, ужас!) не понравилась, но потом втянулся и стал относиться чуть по-другому. Я говорю о Wiener Blut – песни, написанной на основе небезызвестной истории о одном гражданине Австрии, который долгое время держал свою дочь в подвале и насиловал её. Да, истинно, сюжет, который Rammstein обойти не могли. Для меня беда этого трека состоит в том, что сосредоточившись на атмосферности наши герои несколько упустили целостность композиции, она звучит достаточно грубо и рвано, что, безусловно, на 100% оправдывается концепцией, но мне бы хотелось, чтобы это выглядело как-то по-другому… Ииии… Вот он – первый сингл и главный хит – Pussy! Песенка простая и незамысловатая, но очень забавная и веселая, с припевом (который, кстати, очень напоминает Moskаu, в чем, конечно, можно при желании узреть какой-то смысл, но скорее всего его нет и лучше не заморачиваться), бриджиком и парой строчек куплетов на английском языке. В данном случае английский язык нисколько не смущает, потому что всю ту глубину мысли, которую несет нам песня невозможно более точно выразить на другом языке. Но шутки в сторону – заглавный трек альбома - Liebe ist für alle da. Песенка вышла приятной, мелодичной, немного с маниакальным уклоном, прелесть да и только, мне, почему то она видится идейным продолжением Feuer & Wasser, но это уже личные ассоциации. Слушаем дальше - Mehr, кусочек записи которой в студии был одной из первых весточек с альбома. Скажу откровенно, с первыми прослушиваниями трек мне не понравился, чем я был крайне расстроен, в дальнейшем я и в нем нашел положительные моменты, но осадок-то остался. Песенка про жадность, в конце которой Тилля от неё аж стошнило (от жадности, думаю, не от песни). После сравнительно спокойных, интересных куплетов ждешь, что припев прям таки грянет, а он оказался простым как 3 копейки – в основном расстроило именно это. Но не будем о грустном, хотя нет, будем, только теперь по поводу второй баллады – Roter Sand. Нет, песня очень красивая, отдает духом 20-30-х годов прошлого века, а грустно, потому что лирический горой, от лица которого ведется повествование, погибает на дуэли… Вот, казалось бы всё, классический набор из 11 песен подошел к концу, но нет, на этот раз Rammstein (вероятно в честь возвращения после столь долгого отсутствия) порадовали поклонников еще и бонус-диском, на который поместили еще 5 треков, среди которых 3 совершенно новые композиции, оркестровая версия Roter Sand и, как выяснилось, еще одна версия Roter Sand, только с названием Liese. Если про оркестровую версию говорить особенно нечего, всё примерно так и ожидалось, то на остальных треках я бы остановился поподробнее. Führe mich – извиняюсь за стиль письма, но просто афигенный трек! Серьезный, среднетемповый с холодным, стальным голосом Тилля – одним словом «мощь». Затем следует еще одна красивая, эмоциональная баллада Donaukinder, которая возвращает нас во времена альбома Mutter… Далее располагается Halt – песня, хорошо отражающая мое настроение в некоторые периоды времени. Эдакий маниакально-мизантропичный трек, после которого идет собственно оркестровая версия Roter Sand’ а и завершающая композиция – Liese, которая является ни чем иным, как первой версией все того же Roter Sand’а. В общем говоря, Liese и Roter Sand – две стороны одной медали, обе песни о любви, но если вторая о высоких чувствах и гибели за них, то первая о том, как некий Якоб изнасиловал пастушку по имени Лиза. Вот на этой радостной ноте и кончается новый «лучший альбом всех времен и народов». Да, после чательного ознакомления я могу сказать, что LIFAD – лучший альбом Rammstein, правда, только в комбинации «альбом + бонус CD», потому что некоторые недочеты в регулярном релизе с лихвой компенсируются бонусами.
Если говорить в общем, то нельзя не отметить потрясающее качество записи, а особенно ударных, они звучат мощнее, чем когда бы то ни было, и не менее впечатляющую вокальную работу, стольких красок и оттенков в вокальных партиях у Rammstein, пожалуй, еще не было.
Вот такой он – новый альбом легендарной группы и лучший альбом 2009 года по моему мнению. В общем-то, я мог написать и больше, но решил ограничиться небольшой рецензией, хотя в итоге вышло не так уж мало, страшно представить, что бы было, если б я за полноценную принялся ;)

It's really annoying me now, cause I want to get away on a holiday before I start uni, and this would be ideal. Shame I can't seem to get anyone to commit to going :-(

12: Letzte Instanz’s Schuldig (”Guilty”) was a mostly uninteresting alt-metal album. But the songs were extremely catchy and stood out well one from another. Usually Letzte’s albums will have a few dud tracks which just don’t stick in the brain, but not this time around. This is as good of a pop metal album as anyone has produced, as far as I’m concerned.

11: Amorphis’ Skyforger caught me by surprise. Like Schuldig, it’s main asset is that its riffs are extremely catchy. Most of its songs in fact are built upon one or two riffs which are repeated through the whole song, which serves to make the songs very distinct in the mind.

10: Isis’ Wavering Radiant, however, is very unlike the previous two: the songs aren’t exactly what one would call catchy. But they are heavily atmospheric, and very heavy. The songwriting has improved since the last two albums, and after seeing them in concert this year I can also say they put on a great show.

9: Rome’s Flowers From Exile is a big departure from the martial atmospheres of their previous work. I liked those better, but the new Rome (self-described as “folk noir”, which will apparently continue with the next album as well) is hardly bad. It’s not as memorable as Masse Mensch Material (last year’s #2 album), but it definitely contains some emotive gems.

8: Eluveitie’s Evocation 1 – The Arcane Dominion was a worthy attempt at an acoustic album. The drums and bass give it a denser texture than one would expect from an acoustic album – almost as if it were a rock album (a la early Garmarna). For the most part the songs stand well on their own, though occasionally it falls into the rut of metal bands trying to go acoustic – the feeling that “this was originally a metal song” – though not nearly so much as bands which release acoustic versions of songs which were originally metal (e.g., Subway to Sally’s Nackt, Letzte Instanz’s Das Weisse Lied).

7: Faun’s Buch der Balladen (”Book of Ballads”) would be several places ahead if it had more songs like Sigurdlied (”Sigurd Song”) and Tanz Über Die Brücke (”Dance Over the Bridge”), brilliantly atmospheric harp pieces with haunting double-female vocals. As it is the album meanders around with mediocre to good songs around these two. They’ve chosen not to go experimental as they were playing with on Totem (2007’s #10 album), which you are immediately made aware of on the cover labelled “Acoustic”. It’s very much a throwback to early Faun overall, but that’s hardly a bad thing.

6: Subway to Sally’s Kreuzfeuer (”Crossfire”) doesn’t seem to have the touch that was apparent in Herzblut to Bastard (2007’s #2 album), but is still a worthy listen. There are a lot of catchy songs on the album, but they don’t have the unique folk-y sound that Subway at various points put on their songs. Nevertheless, their talent is still apparent, and the album is a fine listen.

5: Sólstafir’s Köld is an interesting mix of almost-black metal, almost-post-rock compositions, and an almost-Western flair. Top it off with sludgy clean vocals, and it’s certainly a hard album to pin down to a particular genre. The dynamics of it, extended sections of minimalistic melancholy juxtaposed with towering anthems, make for a fine album.

4: Unto Ashes’ The Blood of my Lady was a big surprise, and by far the best album Ashes has ever made. The help from Sonne Hagal’s vocalist served well to make a much richer album vocally. The somber beauty of Sonne Hagal’s albums has also carried over, especially in the two songs lifted from Jordansfrost (Who Has Seen the Wind and Vengeance; by no coincidence the best songs on the album). There is much less of the eeriness that characterized earlier Unto Ashes albums (though it has not completely disappeared; I Will Lead You Down is very much traditional Unto Ashes).

3: Caspian has become one of my favorite post-rock bands. With Tertia, they’ve continued with wonderful and enthralling compositions – heavier than one would expect from Explosions in the Sky, for example, but never quite approaching post-metal from any direction. Tertia is even more heavily atmospheric than even The Four Trees (2007’s #7 album), with extended sections of reverbed guitar noise, and more experimental, with more glockenspiel and drum kits. It’s a fine listen, and like The Four Trees, rarely gets boring – a rare feat for a purely instrumental post-rock band.

2: Altar of Plagues’ White Tomb is a lot like Sólstafir, except more so. It’s clearly post-black-metal, with harsh vocals and sprawling compositions (though without any hint of uplifting shoegaze atmosphere), and again the dynamics are what make the album. The production is extremely good, and the atmosphere is masterfully woven, evoking somewhat of a post-apocalyptic angst.

1: Newcomer Wardruna bursts onto the scene with Runaljod – gap var Ginnunga, a beautiful and haunting concept album about the runic alphabet. Reminiscent of Karl Sanders but without the kitsch, Runaljod is minimalistic, heavily atmospheric, and extremely dark, weaving its themes through understated fiddles, ancient horns, distant chants, and a variety of improvised percussions. It’s definitely an album to get enveloped in, and I eagerly await the rest of the trilogy.

Best EP: Wolves in the Throne Room’s Malevolent Grain was leaps and bounds better than their forgettable full-length Black Cascade which followed shortly after. The first song, A Looming Resonance, is not only by far the best songs Wolves has ever done, but possibly one of the best songs I know (and I don’t say that lightly). With a dark shoegaze atmosphere constructed with black metal stylings and the immaculate vocals of Jamie Myers of Hammers of Misfortune, the result is an extremely emotive and poignant song. The other track Hate Crystal was above par for Wolves too: though more typical for them, the chord progression at the end also turned out very emotive. It’s a shame Black Cascade didn’t follow in this vein.

Best Split: Though I was tempted to give it to Panopticon and Wheels Within Wheels’ It’s Later Than You Think, I can’t withhold it from Alcest and Les Discrets’ split. Alcest’s Percées De Lumière was more reminiscent of Amesoeurs than Alcest, and yet managed to sound better than Amesoeurs (though still not quite as good as Alcest from Souvenirs d’un autre monde (2007’s #3 album)). However the real standout from the EP was Les Discrets’ L’ Échappée, a beautiful not-quite-black-metal-but-heavier-than-most-post-rock song with strong vocals, confident percussion, and very present guitars. I look forward very much to what Fursy will create with his upcoming album.

Best Compilation: The World Comes to an End at the End of a Journey, featuring six post-black-metal artists Ethereal Beauty, Shyy, Heretoir, Soliness, Dernier Martyr, and Dopamine. Heretoir and Shyy were definitely the highlights of the compilation, but there was nothing worse than listenable on the whole album. The maturation of this scene as these bands release albums and get big is going to be a fine development in the still nascent post-black-metal-scene.
