the thing is, alternative made plenty sense when applied to REM, the Cure and the first wave of Grunge, as it WAS an alterantive to the arena rock likes of Def Leppard & Motley CRue. Now however, is there any rock music that isn't either alternative, metal or indie - with metal and indie getting lumped with the alt. tag as well. And what the hell is alternative metal?

ridiculous tag. as a rule of crowd behavior, rock before 1980 is pigeonholed as 'classic rock', rock after 1980 as 'alternative rock'. that's all. we just cannot take words literally, it wouldn't make sense. there is no real alternative rock in the top 15 of this list.

@ bloudeuedd_xx: I agree that Coldplay and Linkin Park shouldn't be here, but Red Hot Chili Peppers are definitely alternative rock.

could someone please remove bands like coldplay, red hot chili peppers, linkin park etc. from tag alt. rock...I have a feeling I'm not the only one who thinks they shouldn't be here...

Someone calling Avenged Sevenfold alternative rock? That fucked up. Anyways, the term really doesn't make much sense anymore. Usually, the term was supposed to refer to bands like Sonic Youth, The Pixies, Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr. and those early 90s rock bands. But there's now way too many bands that take out from it's sound, that you're left with a lot of other genres. There's those that are both alt-rock/hard rock (Stone Temple Pilots, Foo Fighters), those that fall under post-grunge (Bush, Live, Collective Soul), those that have some pop elements (Green Day, Coldplay, Fall Out Boy, The Killers), and some aggresive post-grunge bands that go into alternative metal (Breaking Benjamin, Seether, Three Days Grace). The definition is way too broad these days. Honestly, alternative rock feels like a genre, and all these other genres (post-grunge, post-punk revival, pop punk, power pop, indie rock) feels like subgenres of alt-rock.

You people are way to ridiculously over picky with your genres. They arn't a defining term, its just a part of the whole music sound. Not many bands fit into just one genres, so calm down. And BTW, Alot of people see "Rock" as Kiss, AC/DC etc etc, and coldplay dont really sound like either of them at all. Who cares.

citing myself : "i think people tend to stick with words they have become to be used to. and we are not who invent words, concepts, and meanings. they are given to us by opinion leaders. even when things change in reality (like alternative becoming mainstream), people will stick to their old perceptions. the only way out is to create new concepts that go with the changed reality and popularize them. so let't start. let's think for ourselves and not go with the crowd." what kind of rock are you listening to ? and are you sure that it's rock ? from a different perspective, people call songs 'jazz', 'new age', everything all over the place. we don't listen without preconceptions.

It's placement as a genre is debatable. I mean I can see similarities between Modest Mouse, Auf Der Maur, Pixies, Muse, Radiohead, The Breeders, Built to Spill, Superchunk, etc.

in fact, 'alternative rock' is not a genre, it has become a label of mainstream perception now and doesn't make any sense any more. intelligent people sense cultural change and think about how to put it in words. for a canging reality, we need new concepts ...
