The Top Songs of 2006

Howdy. If you liked the album list from 4 days ago… this should be up your alley.

This will be nowhere as long as that list though, cause that would pretty much take days to figure out, honestly. The worst part about this is that i'm bound for forget probably a dozen songs… oh well.

And i'll quote myself from last year…

The other problem is that i could basically fill up the list with my favorite albums from this year, but that would be silly so i tried to spread it out. That actually eliminatates accuracy somewhat.
So here you go.

Here's a list of our "honourable mentions" in no particular order:
Genghis Tron - Chapels
Set Your Goals - An Old Book Misread
Bury Your Dead - Let Down Your Hair
Remembering Never - Gangsta Rap & Peppermint Schnapps
Intronaut - Gleamer
After the Burial - Fingers Like Daggers
VERSE - Lost
Lye by Mistake - Dream as I May, I Feel It, and It's So Wrong
Dead to Fall - All My Heroes Have Failed Me
Dragonforce - Through the Fire and Flames
Textures - Touching the Absolute
Capsule - Josephine's
Protest the Hero - Nautical
Unearth - This Glorious Nightmare
Phoenix Mourning - Waiting for the King
Textures - Upwards
The Faceless - Horizons of Chaos I: Oracle of the Onslaught
Genghis Tron - Warm Woods
Set Your Goals - This Very Moment
The Esoteric - Destroy, She Said
Bleeding Through - The Painkiller
Deathkiller - Take Me to Your Bleeder
Lye by Mistake - Aboriginal Negatives
Between the Buried and Me - Blackened
Protest the Hero - Bury the Hatchet
From a Second Story Window - The Crusher
Silent Civilian - Lies in the House of Shame

And the "Top 15 Songs of 2006"
15 - Nasum - X Marks the Spot
I don't know if you can count this. Oh well. Unreleased song and released now, it's freaking awesome and shows how great this grind band was.

14 - Parkway Drive - Gimme a D
Another one that sort of counts, but it does for me. Awesome way to open up a really really great album. Heavy stuff.

13 - After the Burial - A Steady Decline
So glad i found this obscure amazing band. So so heavy… i guess this is deathcore? I dunno, but it hits you like a ton of bricks right from the beginning.

12 - The Faceless - All Dark Graves
Boy i love this band. Maybe the song with the most melody on the album but still bruising. I love the time signature changes.

11 - Ligeia - Heart Attack
Great singing/screaming combo on this metalcore track from a great new band. One of the best hooks of the year for metalcore releases, a standout track on a great record.

10 - Ankla - Deceit
SO good. I wish it was longer, but it just pummels you with blazing heaviness for 150 seconds. Gotta love the Brazilian/tribal influences here, it's like Ill Niño if they were still good.

9 - Bury Your Dead - Mirror, Mirror...
I really like that these guys experimented a little, and the electronics in this song are such a cool touch. Makes it very memorable as the album winds down. Fun track to drive with windows down to.

8 - Burn the Shroud - Well Remembered
I'm going to count this as 2006 even though it's on the fence. SUCH a good band, get a record deal already!! If you like From a Second Story Window with harsher vocals, here you go. Eat it.

7 - From a Second Story Window - These Lights Above Us
Standout track on a top 5 album of the year for me. While i miss Sean on the mic, the new vocalist really mixes things up and adds a nice touch to the band. He's got a little more variety, and this is the best song to show it off.

6 - Set Your Goals - Echoes
What a way to end the album of the year. Sing-songy and DAMN good at it, this band just knows how to write hooks like they've been doing it for 20 years. Instead, the group members are all about 20 years old. Not the last from them…

5 - Kingdom of Sorrow - Buried in Black
Anytime you have Jamey Jasta with a new group trying something interesting, you can bet i'm gonna love it. Think of it as Hatebreed plus Crowbar and you get a skull-fracturing beat and brutal (but fun) chorus. Here's to a full-length record!

4 - The Faceless - An Autopsy
The best album opener of 2006, by far. Incredible combination of technical guitar work, blazing drums, mind-numbing bass, and crazy synth (yeah really!). Keep up with this song cause you never know where it's headed. Again, so happy i found this band.

3 - Set Your Goals - Mutiny!
MUTINY! I LOVE how this song builds up through the course of three tracks, then crescendos right to this with awesome power and punch. Just thinking about this song makes me want to listen to it about 368 times. Catchiest song of 2006, absolutely, hands down.

2 - Burn the Shroud - Dismembering Heaven
Again, this is such a phenomenal band and i can't believe they're not on a record contract. Somebody sign them. Punishing drumming with pulverizing vocals and guitars give this band so much more energy than ordinary loud music today. Can't wait for more from them soon!

1 - HORSE the Band - Pizza Nif
Rarely does a song so far eclipse the rest of the tracks on an album as much as this one, but "Pizza Nif" may be the best HORSE song… EVER. I'm serious. Just when three songs in a row about pizza aren't enough, you get the best pizza song IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND. It saves the Pizza EP. Go listen to it, people.
