The 30-Day Song Challenge

Why not? I like sharing my favorite songs and the stories/meaning behind them.

Day 1 (13 March 2011) – Your Favorite Song
Coldplay - In My Place
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkXg3Cquo9A
Just a perfect song on all levels, from the lyrics to the guitar riff to especially the soul and passion behind it. Years after its release, it's the only song that I can still hear as if it just came out yesterday.

Day 2 (14 March 2011) – Your least favorite song
Eminem - Love the Way You Lie (feat. Rihanna)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uelHwf8o7_U
After long deliberation, I had to go with a song that everyone seems to love and I hate. Now I know I'm not well-versed in rapology, but this one is particularly awful. The rapping is way too throaty to be considered any form of art. Rihanna seems way out of place (but you know, Eminem + Rihanna = $$$). Oh, and with laughable lyrics like "maybe that's what happens when a tornado meets a volcano," it seems like a 5th grader wrote the song. Worst part is - the radio can't get enough of it. No, thank you.

Day 3 (15 March 2011) – A song that makes you happy
The Beach Boys - Barbara Ann
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wbMqRO6lnc
I'm not exactly known for my happy music taste. But, then of course there's The Beach Boys. They're everything that's right about pop music (which you don't see nearly enough of today). I dare you to listen to Barbara Ann and not smile. From the humorous (and great) harmonies to the laughter in the track, this one always puts a smile on my face. Of course, it reminds me of Saved by the Bell, too.

Day 4 (15 March 2011) – A song that makes you sad
Michael Giacchino - Life and Death
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZByGQzgembg
Of the dozens of songs I could've picked, I had to go with the one that pulls at my heartstrings. So of course it involves LOST! Way back in Season 1 when Boone died and Aaron was born, this song played and I was a blobbering mess. I still have the song and listen to it on sad days because it really just gets to me: the piano and the strings along with the significance attached to it. It's heartbreakingly beautiful.
Runner up: The Blind Boys of Alabama - I Shall Not Walk Alone

Day 5 (22 March 2011) – A song that reminds you of someone
George Michael - Faith
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lu3VTngm1F0
This song reminds me of Cole Hamels. In a totally non-gay way I might add. Ok, yes, I know it sounds a little gay. But there's a story behind it, I swear! My sister and I were heading to a Phillies game and she was nervous about Hamels starting. So I reassured her that he would do just fine, adding "you gotta have faith." So naturally this song defined the day and we still sing it anytime Hamels pitches. Cole ended up getting the win, by the way…along with a new, unofficial at-bat song.
Runner up: Kate Nash - We Get On (reminds me of basically any girl I've ever known)

Day 6 (3 April 2011) – A song that reminds of you of somewhere
Kid Rock - All Summer Long
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwIGZLjugKA
You can judge the song or Kid Rock all you want. Believe me, I won't judge you. He's nowhere near the top of the list of my favorite artists. Still, this song always reminds me of Northern Michigan, where I vacation. Basically every lyric in the song reminds me of some sort of adventure I had up north…because it's so true. From the summer love, to the summer song, and summer lake adventures. It's all 100% accurate. Plus, you don't hear many songs that aren't about big cities or the south, so it's a nice change. Damn, now I wanna go to Michigan!
Runner up: AC/DC - You Shook Me All Night Long (reminds me of Deer Park Tavern)

Day 7 (7 April 2011) – A song that reminds you of a certain event
Boyz II Men - Water Runs Dry
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9N9opF-PK5k
Definitely the hardest day thus far. Songs don't really remind me of events (unless they're concerts). So let's go way back to my childhood. Story time! Way back when, my friends and I were going to put on a concert where the guys performed Boyz II Men and the girls did TLC. Ah, the 90s. So we decided our song was going to be "Water Runs Dry" and somehow, we even had choreography though I have no clue how given the tempo. Yeah, the "show" ended up not being much, but I'll always associate the song with it.
Runner up: Savage Garden - Truly Madly Deeply (reminds me of my first slow dance - corny, I know)

Day 8 (17 April 2011) – A song that you know all the words to
Green Day - Jesus of Suburbia
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSIIuqNqJOE
So, I could basically answer this one with like 90% of the songs on my iPod. So, what I decided to do was to select the longest song on my computer (without those five minute hidden song pauses) that I knew all the words to. Green Day was the result. Even though I kind of look at it more like five songs than one. But the benefit is its length: since it's 9 minutes long and I love all 9 minutes, it makes for a great running song, cause it makes the running go by even quicker.
Runner up: Édith Piaf - Non, je ne regrette rien (thanks to my French minor…and Marion Cotillard movies)

Day 09 (27 August 2011) – A song that you can dance to
Michael Jackson - Beat It
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9wsqA2ZZ6U
Cop-out choice? Yes. But it doesn't make it any less true. I'm not a dancer. Period. I can do the Macarena, however! But there's something about "Beat It" that just gets my feet moving. Plus, I think the choreography in the music video is kind of cool. Yes, I try to recreate it when I hear this in a bar. No, I am usually not successful in looking cool. Either way, it still kind of makes me feel good.
Runner up: Los del Rio - Macarena (yes, I totally went there)

Day 10 (28 August 2011) – A song that makes you fall asleep
Damien Rice - Sleep Don't Weep
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24BOBwJ8p7Q
Well, the song is 22 minutes long! And it doesn't have the cool bonus track like "Eskimo" does. Yeah, one of Damien Rice's weaker songs I have to say. I'm all into slow, but I feel like I'm taking a Lunesta if I take a listen to this one. I wonder if the title has anything to do with it?
Runner up: Ray Charles - You Are My Sunshine (this was the song my parents sang to me to put me to bed when I was a baby)

Day 11 (5 September 2011) – A song from your favorite band
Coldplay - Glass of Water
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-92XB8EU3E
Considering my favorite song is by my favorite band, I was forced to pick another one! So, I decided to go with one from an EP and not an LP, so it might be a little lesser known. But this is easily one of my favorite Coldplay songs. The lyrics, the solos, and just the all-in-all atmosphere are perfect. It's optimistic, but not sugary sweet. It's also perfectly performed live. I'm so happy I got a chance to hear it once live, cause it probably won't happen again.
Runner up: Coldplay - Violet Hill (well, it is the Coldplay track with the most plays from me)

Day 12 (22 October 2011) – A song from a band you hate
Oasis - Don't Look Back in Anger
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8OipmKFDeM
I decided to spice this entry up a little…this is a song that I like from a band that I hate. I find Oasis to be mostly cocky, uninspiring, and heartless. Most of all, they technically fit that "mold" of band that I should like but I find most of their songs intolerable. Yet, I still like "Don't Look Back in Anger" - I can't tell you why, I just kind of do. Plus, it's not overplayed like the douchey tunes like "Champagne Supernova" and "Wonderwall."
Runner up: The Black Eyed Peas - The Time (Dirty Bit) (just because it was the first song that came up on the iTunes store that I hated)

Day 13 (6 November 2011) – A song that is a guilty pleasure
Wham! - Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIgZ7gMze7A
Damn, I already put George Michael. Whoops. I don't know if it's just the hilarity of the song/video, but I'm a total sucker for it's entire corniness. The randomness of "Jitterbug!" and pure 80's vibe just make it too hard to resist. Though, between this and "Faith" - I might be starting to question my music taste.
Runner up: Lady GaGa - Bad Romance (Yes, it's hard for me to admit I legitimately like a Lady GaGa song.)

Day 14 (26 July 2012) – A song that no one would expect you to love
Skrillex - Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSeNSzJ2-Jw
About a year ago, I started to get into dubstep, which I never expected since it was probably the type of music I looked down on five years ago. Still, the production is just way perfect and well-thought out on dubstep tracks that it's a genre I've come to love and explore. One of the few types that make me want to create music. Thus, I'm posting the most recognizable dubstep track.
Runner up: Alexisonfire - This Could Be Anywhere in the World (I can even appreciate scream-o.)

Day 15 – A song that describes you
Day 16 – A song that you used to love but now hate
Day 17 – A song that you hear often on the radio
Day 18 – A song that you wish you heard on the radio
Day 19 – A song from your favorite album
Day 20 – A song that you listen to when you’re angry
Day 21 – A song that you listen to when you’re happy
Day 22 – A song that you listen to when you’re sad
Day 23 – A song that you want to play at your wedding
Day 24 – A song that you want to play at your funeral
Day 25 – A song that makes you laugh
Day 26 – A song that you can play on an instrument
Day 27 – A song that you wish you could play
Day 28 – A song that makes you feel guilty
Day 29 – A song from your childhood
Day 30 – Your favorite song at this time last year
