I know your policy is to 'save things for later', but you should consider listening to Beethoven's late string quartets sometime. I particularly recommend the 15th.

So I checked out /r/metal for the first time in a couple months the other day, and apparently Black Dahlia Murder > Witchrist. For fuck's sake.

I'm with you on German baroque music. I've tried to get into Bach several times because of his immense reputation, but as bigtimber112 said below, I'm pretty underwhelmed by his instrumental pieces. I like some of them, to be sure, and I do enjoy his vocal pieces a bit as well, but I find that I have a greater love for Corelli, and even Locatelli, who is like a slightly more accessible Corelli. New Burzum album was serious AIDS.

Part of your problem, along with many other Bach listeners, is that you feel underwhelmed by his instrumental works (to be honest, a good chunk of them are underwhelming). Bach's magnum opuses are found in his vocal works, which are practically endless. Ever heard the St Matthew Passion? Or the Cantata that is BWV 80? You can't accept yourself as a Bach fan or reject any inclinations until you've heard the latter.

I'm on a Corelli marathon myself. Any other recommendations on Baroque music? Because Corelli is making me feel like it's the greatest style of music out there.

I just listened to Eucharist the other day. They were like a lesser At the Gates, but a bit better than ATG's second release, I think.

I couldn't help but notice the severe lack of Bach in your charts, and as my duty as a fellow hessian, I came to advise you to change this. Have you ever given him a chance?

Haha, you generally rotate between the same symphonies I do then! Maybe that's just a commonality between all fans of Beethoven, though; I mean, besides the ones who buy compilations of his music for relaxing, or reading to. Yeck.

I'd highly recommend it friend, I am enjoying almost as much as I do his ninth symphony. Is the sixth your favorite? I can't remember.

I take it you mean an aristocracy made up of philosophers, rather than mere oligarchs, as many would interpret the term? (though even that would be preferable to rule simply by what people say they like). It does also seem that the problem of industrial society can largely be put down to the drive for profit and a naive utilitarianism, and that once we get our collective goals properly sorted, and proper leadership to achieve them, the associated problems will gradually be phased out.

My friend said he read some psychologists reports of Ted K made during his trial. He and I were talking about it and decided people were trying to make excuses for him. As though only a psychopath could have such anti social thoughts. When I went to the United States, where I guess he's more famous than here in NZ, if I brought him up in conversation, I was suprised to find most people knew who he was but categorized him as a mere criminal. Strange, it's completely natural for me to think of him as a wise thinker, no more no less. Certainly not insane. Seems like Ted is completely outnumbered. I'm glad the majority are useless at everything, or else we'd be in some real deep shit.

Hey, I was hoping you had some recs for general classical. Be it obvious or not, I'm looking for something to capture my imagination again. I'm in this strange rut where nothing is quite doing anything to me and taking long walks in the woods or not listening to anything isn't quite doing anything either.

Any recommendations for some Classical era Classical music similar to Mozart and Haydn that I should know about?

Do you have any decent links to Schubert's symphonies other than 4, 8, or 9? Thanks

Haha, I'll take your word for it. I do want to hear at least some of his work though only to appreciate where a lot of electric guitar technique supposedly comes from.

Up until yesterday, I was unaware that ANUS had such great Segovia collections. I'm in Heaven right now!

Another that may possibly make an impression of you is Enemite. It's a Chinese dark ambient project done with the idealism / spirit of Black Metal. As with Burzum, there is a distinct longing 'for what once was' amongst the decadance of modern life. It's from a traditionalist Chinese perspective though, and it's possibly a lot blacker than Burzum. It's basically a journey further and further through the blackness, looking for an escape (or revival) from the current paradigm. It's progressively more and more hopeless though, until the finality and release of Death. Hence why I call it blacker than Burzum, there isn't as much hope or optimism in the final track. I enjoy it even more for the fact that every song serves a purpose in the bigger picture of the album.

I'm still not sure of my definitive opinion on Voivod. I'll get back to them when I go through my Speed Metal collection. Ironically enough (if you consider some of my scoffing to your suggestion in the past), I'm going through each genre, finding the best albums (probably 35 DM, 35 BM, 15 Doom, 15 Speed / Heavy / Thrash etc) and in the hope of eventually formulating a best of 100 Metal canon. Then I think I'll be ready to explore other genres in a more systematic fashion. I'm halfway through Death Metal and Black Metal so far. Some of this crap is killing me to relisten to, but it needs to be purged.

The critique of leftist psychology I think was the most insightful part for me. I'm a programming student, so use & enjoy technology every day. But, I still know how to light a fire without using matches, and admire him for his total commitment to his principles. Not many individuals have that kind of conviction.

How about 'Soulside Journey'? I fail to see the hype over this album. After years of listening, I've discovered that even though it is musically very good, it lacks the content, and meanders around aimlessly structurally... which makes the 'jazz structures' that everyone goes on about within the album even more relevant. Unique aesthetically for 1990, but utterly devoid of any art. What are you thoughts?
