The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation - live at MSPRKT, Moscow (12.02.2010)

Пт 12 Фев – The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation, usssy, Madlene, Glina, Wrist

So, this is my photo report from The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation concert. They also performed as The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble the following day, and I hope I'll make a report about that gig as well, but a bit later.

The evening took place in a place called MSPRKT. The site was not too big, the scene was rather small, but the atmosphere was great. At first we just stood in front of stage, because the seats were placed a bit far, but finally we ended up sitting right on the floor, and many people did the same. Everyone was relaxed and cheerful, so it was very cozy that evening.

There were four supporting bands before The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation themselves came on stage. The first one was Wrist. I must say, they were pretty unlucky to perform first; not many people had gathered by that moment, and the band was hurried by the organizers because the show started later than it had been planned. So it was felt that Wrist musicians were a bit nervous. Nevertheless, they played quite interestingly. At first, I was amazed by the number of pedals they had on stage. :)

So one of Wrist musicians, my acquaintance, spent most of his time sitting there and switching all that things. There was also a guitarist and a sax player.

I must say, that gig was the first one I've ever photographed, so during Wrist performance I was mostly struggling with my camera trying to set it up propely, rather than taking pictures. So I only have two more somehow decent photos or them:

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_t2uo1hHhW5E/S3nRoFrin9I/AAAAAAAAAVQ/f3wQCdY9FB4/s576/r_IMG_2526.jpg

By the way, take a look at the second photo. Wrist guitarist also played a fancy ethnic Australian instrument called didgeridoo. It was making very impressive sounds, some kind of powerful, gurgling drones. That sounded really great.

The second band was called Glina. When they were setting all their instruments, I saw a nice-looking, smiling girl who came and started helping the musicians. At first I thought that maybe she was their manager or something, because she didn't look like a musician at all. But when they started playing, it turned out that she was their vocalist. :) All her ease was gone, she was wandering around the spot murmuring and singing something unrecognizable, with some kind of faraway look. And that was beautiful.

Below are the other musicians photos (there was also a drummer and a guitarist, but I haven't managed to shoot them properly). Glina bass player was also very interesting to look at, really impressive:

And when Glina ended their set, the vocalist turned back into the smiling girl. It was pretty unusual to look at such tranformations. :)

The third band of the evening was called uSSSy. There were only two of them, a guitarist and a drummer, but they were just great. It was clear that they were understanding each other in a second without any words. Their performance was really very impressive and well coordinated, and all the audience cheered them up.

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_t2uo1hHhW5E/S3nRsdWXFUI/AAAAAAAAAV0/-Bv4hnDirzQ/r_IMG_2605.jpg

The guitarist was just essence of calmless and confidence, and it was felt that he wasn't nervous at all.

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_t2uo1hHhW5E/S3nRt1hMtQI/AAAAAAAAAWA/j_xXAccIe5U/s576/r_IMG_2617.jpg

And the drummer reminded me of Ville Haapasalo and Kurt Cobain at the same time. :)

They also had a pedal with the name of the band on it, and I couldn't stand taking photo of it. So here it is. :)

So far, in my humble opinion, uSSSy were the best of the supporting bands.

The fourth and the final band of the warmup was Madlene. They had a really expressive frontwoman playing guitar and singing, so most photographers activized at once and were taking her photographs throughout all their performance. I was shooting mainly her too, I must admit:

Their bass player was also interesting to look at. He was rotating across his part of stage in some kind of trance, but at the same time he was switching the pedals with his feet perfectly in time. :) One moment he nearly fell of stage, but one of the photographers was near him and didn't let him do it; that was a funny moment. Here he is tuning his guitar before the performance:

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_t2uo1hHhW5E/S3nRvu3zJmI/AAAAAAAAAWM/xJDn6VAwWC8/r_IMG_2641.jpg

Several more photos of them. Again, unfortunately I have no decent drummer photos, he was sitting practically in darkness.

It was felt that Madlene frontwoman was completely exhausted by the set. I took a photo of her when they finished playing and she was sitting aside resting:

Finally, it was time for the long awaited The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation musicians to play.

Setting up all the stuff (they had four notebooks, sequensers and loads of other devices apart from the instruments):

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_t2uo1hHhW5E/S3nR1L0xcUI/AAAAAAAAAW4/fmDIlUknC5U/s576/r_IMG_2708.jpg

The band leader, Jason Kohnen, said some greetings (all the musicians seemed to be in a good mood), and TMFDC started their set.

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_t2uo1hHhW5E/S3nR1i2klVI/AAAAAAAAAW8/k7X_6RNZtXw/r_IMG_2718.jpg

Gideon Kiers, who was responsible for FX, was sitting near the notebook throughout all the set, smoking a lot.

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_t2uo1hHhW5E/S3nR1xngO-I/AAAAAAAAAXA/YYkAp48ysJw/r_IMG_2719.jpg

Eelco Bosman, who played guitar, was looking severe. :) I must say, he was a bit on his own because he was standing not right on stage but near it. Nevertheless, this fact didn't seem to disorder his skills.

Jason Kohnen was playing bass guitar.

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_t2uo1hHhW5E/S3nR4F8ZssI/AAAAAAAAAXQ/9uSDWH-H2k4/r_IMG_2746.jpg

And next to him, closely to the center of stage there stood a violinist Sarah Anderson.

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_t2uo1hHhW5E/S3nR6ig19iI/AAAAAAAAAXg/00W30fD12wE/r_IMG_2769.jpg

She was really, really beautiful and impressive, so I took lots of her photos. :)

Hilary Jeffery improvised on trombone and also was tuning some complex-looking stand with some devices and cables. Most time his face was closed by his trombone and the microphone, but I've managed to take several photos.

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_t2uo1hHhW5E/S3nSERQhyiI/AAAAAAAAAYk/LegzpjUkXQY/r_IMG_2816.jpg

There was also a drummer on stage. I don't know if he is a permanent member of TMFDC or not, but he was good at drumming, that's certain. And my friend (who, by the way, has made an excellent bootleg of the show) was witty to notice that he resembled Silent Bob a bit. :)

Charlotte Cegarra was standing in back, also making effects and sometimes singing a kind of back-vocals. She was completely absorbed in music, dancing in rhythm, and looked very nice.

The band played an hour-long set without any breaks, nonstop. That was an amazing performance, one of the best gigs I've ever seen.

I hope you enjoy the rest of the photos. I'm not professional at taking photographs yet, and it was a new experience for me to shoot a concert, but I tried my best. :)
