January CD Buys

Lots of new music this month. Lots. On we go…

>> Edie Brickell & New Bohemians: Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars
Found this used for a couple of bucks. Got it mainly for the songs "What I Am" and "Circle", which I have fond memories of from one of my favorite radio stations which is no longer in existence.

>> The Buggles: The Age of Plastic
>> The Buggles: Adventures in Modern Recording

A couple of reissues, the former of which I already had the previous edition. Both are newly remastered and have bonus tracks. Adventures in Modern Recording in particular is notable for having demos of material which only recently came to finished form on the latest Yes album, Fly From Here, some thirty years later.

>> The Chemical Brothers: Hanna
The soundtrack to the film. This music is essential to the movie, and recalls the images of it very well. A great movie with a great soundtrack.

>> Thomas Newman: Finding Nemo
The score to one of PIXAR's finest.

>> Anthony Phillips: Sail The World
>> Anthony Phillips: Field Day
>> Anthony Phillips: Missing Links Volume IV: Pathways & Promenades
>> Anthony Phillips & Guillermo Cazenave: The Meadows of Englewood
>> Anthony Phillips & Joji Hirota: Wildlife

As you may guess, I did some catalog filling this month. My Anthony Phillips collection is now nearly complete. In a rare departure for me, one of these albums was purchased as mp3s online: Meadows of Englewood. That particular album was released only in Spain years ago, and is long out of print. Fortunately, it became available to purchase as mp3s. In most cases I would not do this, but as there is no physical option, I broke my rule for this. If the album is ever repressed for wide(r) release on CD again, you can be sure I will get a physical copy. But I digress.

Field Day is Ant's latest proper album from 2005, a two-CD set of guitar and other stringed instrument pieces. Meadows of Englewood is a collaboration with a Spanish musician from the mid-'90s. The remaining albums represent the other large portion of Ant's catalog: library music written for various television programs in the UK. Though more incidental in nature, this music is every bit as enjoyable as his proper albums.

…all of this, plus my usual haul of free CC music from Ektoplazm.
