Fri 5 Nov – Christy Moore with Declan Sinnott:
Christy Moore is one of those rare artists who sounds the same when you hear him live as he does on record. And as he sounds magnificent on record that made for some wonderful listening!
After a good-humoured moan about how early in the evening the gig started (7.30pm) we got straight into the good stuff - no awkward warm up period for this man. He played most of his most famous tracks, although that meant neither of my two personal favourites ("Beeswing" and "Cricklewood") came up. One little lad was celebrating his eleventh birthday and Christy dedicated "Does This Train Stop on Merseyside?" to him, apologising that it wasn't the song the boy had requested (apparently that one just wouldn't come together).
In between the beautiful ballads there were angry (but witty) talk-sing numbers, including one inspired by being arrested by a policewoman who was also that year's Rose of Tralee. And lots of wit generally. God, but the man's funny.
Finally, an honourable mention for Declan Sinnott who played his various guitars (and boy does he have a lot of them) wonderfully and even sang for us.
