Whoo! I found a group that shares my frustration: Indie is not a Genre! Indie means that the album is not published by a major label. In other words, you go to a local show, and pick up a CD that has no art, and the track titles are written on the CD in sharpie… yeah, that's Indie. Or the album is not backed by one of the huge companies that control about 70% of the worlds music.
Beck's album One Foot In The Grave is Indie, it was not published by a major label (K Records, which, to date, has released a total of 175 ablums). Beck's album Guero is not indie, it was published by Geffen, which also published Rob Zombie, Angels & Airwaves, and Nelly Furtado. Oh, and Geffen is a sub-label of Universal. Which is "the largest business group and family of record labels in the record industry." Not so independent.
However, to say that One Foot In The Grave belongs to the Indie genre is incorrect: that's not the style of music it is! It is folk rock.
Indie is not a Genre! And if an album is published by one of the big four (Universal Music Group, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, EMI Group, and Warner Music Group), or one of their sub-labels, there is no way it can be considered indie. So guess what? Death Cab for Cutie (the band most tagged as indie on last.fm) is not Indie! They are signed to Atlantic Records, which is a sub-label of Warner. Sorry, people. And, sadly, Tooth and Nail is owned by EMI, so they are not indie either.
