I'm listening to this right now from the "Let's Get it On" vinyl LP, and I got to tell you, the feeling is just unbelievable. As it is every time I put it on.
I see a pattern in the other sweet soul tracks, Sexual Healing and Let's stay together, and it goes something like this:
First there should be a song, that describes a young man meeting the sweetest girl, and falling in love. Maybe it would be Fall in love with me. When they have gotten to know each other, and all this talking starts to go stale and because of the guy is a civilized man, he doesn't go for A Little Less Conversation and instead goes for Let's Get it on. Well, now there should be an ode for being happily together, but it certainly wouldn't be Happy Together. As in any relationship, sometimes things go wrong, and now in this case the girl has a temper, and decides leaves the boy. Maybe the boy didn't value the girl enough (happens too often) and only realized it after it was (almost) too late. Now it's time for Let's Stay Together. After such a great track the girl of course can't refuse, and when they reunite, their anthem is Sexual Healing. This concludes the story. But the point is there is a great track for every phase of love, so why not use them right.
What goes for Let's Get It On, happens like often happens with great tracks: they tend to overshadow rest of the album. Sometimes the albums even go back to the track, like in this case the Keep Gettin' it on as the last track on the A-side. All the other tracks kind of pale aside that one track, and makes the whole A-side a "Let's get it on" -single, where the A2 and A3 feel like B-sides. On the actual B-side the same thing seems to continue, but then the B2 (Distant Lover)-track works as itself and reignites the record again. It has been sampled by Spaceship, so a nice surprise for all you sample junkies. The thing keeps going, and this makes the record a decent one. Maybe the weaker tracks are forgivable firstly because of the great A1-track and also as the couple of less great tracks that are allowed even on an album classic. Due to the A1 track this album is certainly a must for all collectors and completionists, but is nothing in comparison to What's Going On for instance.
