Another Billboard/Last.fm chart comparasion

Link to first comparasion

Exactly six months later, I'm at it again. Same ground rules apply. Some new additions:

1. If the highest charting version of the track isn't main artist - track title, then I state the tagging of the highest charting version in the first parenthesis.

2. If the streamable version of the track follows neither of the previous conventions, I will then list the streamable version of the track in parenthesis.

And now, with the fact that fingerprinting should be in the near future, the number with the plus sign in parenthesis are even more useful, as fingerprinting should allow most of the misspellings to be counted as the same track.

Looks like pop music is making an ever larger dent than it was six months ago. I think it's because the new people that are signing up are more of the "non-technical but still computer literate" crowd that is more likely to listen to pop music. Basically, the people that make up the majority of users on social networking sites.

There were a couple of things in the numbers that surprised me. The first was how high No One was. It's good to see that that many people are listening to her, but slightly sad because I don't think that's her best song by a long shot. And I don't think in the almost year and half I've been here I've seen an R&B artist chart that high (unless you count Amy Winehouse). The second surprise was Britney Spears. I haven't heard anything good about the new album, but that's now two songs in the top 100, and the album has been out for a while now. And for her to be more popular here than on the radio? Shocking, to say the least. The third suprise was the amount of listeners to the Miley Cyrus track. I don't think there are that many tweens on this site, so it looks like her popularity extends further than I thought it did agewise, as that number of listeners isn't bad at all for a fairly new pop song.

And finally, looking at the Gainers and Losers, the worst charting sons still are mainly primarily regional hip-hop and country, which is completely understandable, seeing as neither has much of a audience outside the United States. And the biggest gainers are rock and indie pop songs, though, due to the nature of last.fm, songs that were popular over the summer/fall but are now descending the charts are still doing well on here, as just because radio stations aren't playing them and people aren't buying as many copies doesn't mean people have stopped listening.

P.S. - One of the fun things about this was going to these artist's pages and looking at the shoutbox chatter. People argue about the most trivial things. Best example being the whole Timbaland/OneRepublic debate.
