Covering lost 80s classics

Last week I got the limited edition of the new Bande a Part, which continues their treatments of from their previous Nouvelle Vague. The earlier album gave the bossa treatment to songs like Just Can't Get Enough and Making Plans For Nigel (based on the idea that bossa nova means 'new wave'). This time, they also go beyond bossa to include a 30's take on Dancing With Myself (think Squirrel Nut Zippers) and a reggae version of Israel (inspired by the late The Israelites.

As it happens, I also picked up this month's issue of Q Magazine- the 80s Issue. The free CD has 15 modern covers of 80s classics. Most of them are pretty crap, but Let's Dance is pretty good and Running Up That Hill (which I already had) is fabulous.

While none of these cover versions really outshine the originals, they have at least prompted me to go back and listen to these classics with renewed interest, and even discover a couple of hidden gems I didn't yet have in my collection. So, without further ado, here are my top 10 rediscovered lost eighties classics:

1. Dance With Me
2. Psyche
3. Heaven Up Here
4. O Pamela
5. Upside Down
6. Waves
7. I Can't Escape Myself
8. Heaven
9. Too Drunk To Fuck
10. In a Manner of Speaking
