BEST ARTIST I SAW THIS YEAR: Broken Social Scene
An extra-long set. The band that gives and gives some more. After playing what was meant to be the closer, It's All Gonna Break, the crowd demanded more. They were blissfully obliging.
Runners-up:
2) Guillemots
3) Mogwai
4) Muse
5) Iron Maiden
BEST SUPPORT ACT: The Young Knives
Supported The Rakes and won me over with their light-hearted approach. Have seen them again since and am plnning to see them AGAIN in 2007.
Runners-up:
2) Foxface (supporting Roddy Woomble)
3) Los Campesinos! (supporting Broken Social Scene)
4) The Dykeenies (supporting The Fratellis)
5) The Maccabees (supporting The Fratellis)
BEST SONG I HEARD LIVE THIS YEAR: Sao Paulo
An 11-minute epic, one part moody piano, one part chant-along anthem, one part bin-lid-bashing, samba-esque grande finale. All parts classic.
Runners-up:
2) Mogwai Fear Satan
3) It's All Gonna Break
4) Here I Go Again
5) Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg
BEST CROWD REACTION: Chelsea Dagger
Well, the crowd had been 'doodoodoo'ing the main riff all night long.
Runners-up:
2) Monster
3) Chasing Cars
4) The Great Escape
5) Hunted By A Freak
LIVE TURKEY OF THE YEAR: Lily Allen
Only endured her because Echo & The Bunnymen were up next. Thank God for moody 70s Liverpool rock.
Runners-up:
2) The Horrors
3) Brickwerk
4) Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly.
5) The Noisettes
BEST STAGE SETUP: Guillemots
Should the far higher-budget setups of Muse and Iron Maiden be beaten off by the fuzzy TVs, disco balls, bubble machines and single narrow screen of the Guillemots? Apparently so.
Runners-up:
2) Iron Maiden
3) Muse
4) We Are Scientists
5) Foxface
BEST MOMENT: Damian Kulash (from OK Go) discreetly disappearing from the stage and turning up in the crowd.
Runners-up:
2) David Coverdale being handed a cuddly toy and complaing that he never gets bras anymore
3) Roddy Woomble's violinst suddenly breaking into an impromptu version of 'Irish Washerwoman' during technical problems.
4) Shouting 'I'm Still Your Fag!' when Kevin Drew asked what song we wanted to hear.
5) Waving at House of Lords (from The Young Knives) - and having him wave back! Twice! *swoon*
And, finally, the complete list of artists I saw this year.
