Patrick Wolf at the Astoria - bringing sexy back.

Wed 11 Apr – Patrick Wolf, No Bra, bishi

I'll have to try my best to be coherent because I'm still feeling pleasantly giddy.

Being a fairly recent convert to the genius that is Patrick Wolf, last night was only the second time I'd seen him live. But hopefully not the last. I'm already suffering post-gig depression and going back to GCSE revision is not much fun when you can't stop thinking about how much fun last night was.

Anyway. I missed No Bra, which was, if I'm honest, deliberate. I like to think of myself as being fairly open-minded, but the thought of a woman with a moustache with quite literally "no bra" did not particularly appeal to me. Bishi was very very good though. We need more sitars in pop! I hope her album's released soon, because I'm looking forward to hearing it…

Patrick himself was divine, of course. I haven't found any setlists but here's a rough idea of the songs he played (they're not really in any particular order).

Get Lost
Teignmouth
The Shadowsea
The Libertine
Pigeon Song
Tristan
Bloodbeat
Overture
Bluebells
Magpie (duet with Bishi)
The Stars (duet with his sister, Jo Apps)
Blackbird
The Magic Position

Encore:
Accident and Emergency (duet with Patricia Quinn of Rocky Horror fame)
Feels like I'm in love

The encore was extremely entertaining, as you can see. :P Everyone got quite hysterical.

So - the highlights.

+ The Libertine. I adore this song anyway, but live it's approximately 100 times better. So energetic. Last night was even better and had added comedy value because at the line "The magician's secrets all revealed" he ripped off his shirt. For lack of a better phrase - "LOL!"

+ Bloodbeat. Also very energetic, and I don't think he played it at the Union Chapel show so it was nice seeing it live for the first time. It's a good song for spaz dancing to.

+ Blackbird. Words fail me."I'm bringing sexy baaaacckkk!" Eat your heart out, Justin Timberlake.

+ Feels like I'm in love. Perfect way to finish off the night.

On a side note, although no one will have the faintest idea of what I'm talking about, I spent the first half of the show convinced that the man standing behind the laptop was Tom Hollander, which was completely illogical. Tom Hollander is a British actor, who has a small role in Pirates of the Carribbean and recently played Mr Collins in the film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. He also played Guy Burgess in Cambridge Spies. Anyway, it was all very confusing but cleared up in the end when Patrick introduced him as Jonathan something. Erg.

But all in all, Tom Hollander confusions aside, a brilliant evening. Come back to London soon, Patrick!
