Original Release: Kansas City
Album Release: Let's Work Together
Track: Kansas City

Track preview via cduniverse

The Rolling Stones, billed as "The Rollin' Stones," played their first gig at London's Marquee Club 45 years ago tonight.

This was the first song the Rolling Stones ever played on stage, unless you argue for the somewhat popular school of thought that any incarnation of just Mick and Keef qualifies as a performance of the Stones, in which case the first song they ever played on stage together was Chuck Berry's Around And Around. But as publicly billed as the Stones, this is the track.

The incarnation on stage on 12 July 1962:
Mick Jagger (vocals)
Keith Richards (guitar)
Brian Jones (guitar)
Ian Stewart (piano)
Dick Taylor (bass)
Tony Chapman (drums) - some conflicts about drums were handled by Tony or Mick Avory, but although but though Mick was rehearsing with them at the time, it was Tony on stage that night.

Why Wilbert Harrison's version for today's selection? Because it was Harrison's recording of the Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller tune (penned 1952) that hit #1 for two weeks in 1959 and sold over a million copies. Never relased in album format until 1969, though, on Let's Work Together. A copy of this single is rare, so snatch it if you see it.
