For the next little while, during my week of final exams, I shall undergo an investigation as to whom is better, Philip Glass or Steve Reich. I have only listened to a few works by each, and as of now my general impression is that their techniques are very similar (the whole minimalism schtick), but already I find that Reich is more open to new styles and sounds/influences, whereas Glass has sort of recirculated the same themes. Overall Reich's sound appeals to me more because it's somewhat more dynamic and somehow more organic. I'm listening to Music in Twelve Parts right now…I'm on the final track Part 12, and…I'm just glad I haven't developed a headache yet. My least favourite was Part 9. I hope that I'll learn to appreciate this album more later on (this is my first listen), as this seems to be widely considered one of the must-listens as far as Glass is concerned.
Next up: Music for 18 Musicians.
